Haru Urara The Shining Star of Losers
A sad day yesterday for fans of horse racing and underdogs

Uma Musume is a popular horse racing game where famous horses in Japanese Horse Racing history are recreated into anime horse girls, each character parallels the history of the actual race horse, still to come is Gold Ship's eccentric personality and Tokai Teio's incredible comeback but we start with Haru Urara who sadly passed away yesterday at 29 years, which would make her nearly 90 in human years.
Haru Urara has the unwanted record of 113 losses with no wins, but to the people of Japan, she came to be known as the shining star of losers, an example of determination and never giving up, Haru Urara gained even more popularity with Uma Musume's release and double when the game went international earlier this year, so much so that a funding page to keep Haru well fed in her retirement years ended up crashing due to so many donations, her fans include international music artists and the Japanese prime minister and has even been referenced next to other athletes with equal underdog status.
Everyone just loves an underdog, her last race had the highest turn out of any horse race in Japanese history.
She did achieve one victory where she won a time trial for retired race horses, so she at least won something even if it wasn't an actual horse race.
It's not unusual for the real horses the Uma Musume characters are based on to have passed on as many of them rode in the 90s with the most prominent one Gold Ship being one of only a couple still alive, more on him next time.
