Welcome to my world.

I'm SomeGuy, 29 years old, residing in Vancouver, BC, Canada. I've studied English Literature, Chinese Martial Arts, and am currently pursuing careers in writing - possibly even in the anime industry itself.

And I work for this site.

And you should be watching Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad.
Or watching Ranma 1/2.
Or learning about the Shinsengumi.
Or planning to visit Vancouver, The Best Place On Earth (actual marketing motto).

Here at the "Smallville" page, I have my personal blog where I'll post about anything and everything. If ya need me or otherwise need to know anything from/about me, here's where I'll be.

If you're really looking for my more professional, site-type stuff, you wanna head over my "Metropolis" world.

Catching Up . . .

Finally watched Slumdog Millionaire and Benjamin Button this week. Only took release on home video for me to do it, hey? And Taken comes out this Tuesday, so it'll continue onwards.

I've also finally gotten Fan Words under 100 submissions in the queue, thank goodness! Slowly but surely . . .

I'm also up to speed with Hajime no Ippo, even though technically I know these parts of the story from the manga. It's all good, really.

In less catchy-up news . . .

My hometown's anniversary festival (The Hyack Festival) is coming around the way. Along with fake 21 Gun salutes using red hot lances and overturned anvils, there's also an annual parade.

I've been in this parade three times in my life: once when I was in grade 5 and won a ballot to represent my elementary school on a giant metal scooter made by the high school, once in Grade 12 as a marching band thing . . . and once again some time after high school, again as a marching band thing - from what I understand, they were short on people, and asked around if old alumni could come help out, so my brother volunteered me.

Now we weren't a real marching band in any sense, and I'm sure all y'all down south would slaughter us. We were the concert band but marching. We were the militia of marching bands. So understand what I mean when I describe my third stint in the Hyack Parade as "being a conscript for the militia". It was as good of an analogy as I could think of at the time.

Aaaaanyways . . . parade . . .

This year'll mark my 4th time. Seems they've called up my kung-fu club to do lion and dragon dance in the parade. Something about the city celebrating its 150th anniversary, and the Chinese community's 100th anniversary in the area. So I'm game for that. Can't say no to a good lion dance, y'know. Especially if it's in the ancestral land.

Ahh . . . gotta love New Westminster . . . we've got the world's largest tin soldier, y'know.

Who Has a Nico Video Account?

I got the downloaded file already, but if anyone here has a Nico Video account, I encourage you to check this out:

【外人】新選組@Anime Evolution 2008【「歌」付き】

Bwahaha . . . I should be a jerk and upload this to YouTube . . . anyway, for those of you wondering, this is 9 minutes of video from last year's Anime Evolution, during the traditional Shinsengumi "Night March".

If you're curious (or if you can't see it), points of interest include:

  • Myself singing "Freeze Ray" from Dr. Horrible
  • Myself and another guy whistling the theme from Metal Gear Solid 4
  • The Shinsengumi crashing the open karaoke (and myself dancing around a little)
  • The Shinsengumi-Mobile briefly
  • The Shinsengumi interrupting the glomp circle, announcing our professions, and then getting glomped
  • The Shinsengumi (wearing blue) catching site of a TF2 Red Scout...
  • The Shinsengumi attempting to chase said scout...

Also, ShadowLight's in there. And that's always good for grins.

Maaaan, the video for this year's gonna be intense . . .

SPONGEBOB!!!!

Just got home from The Third Annual Elans for Canadian Video Games and Animation. I'll write the big write-up tomorrow.

Also, I'm tired, so screw captions. Also tomorrow.

I will mention these bits for now, though:

  • It honestly felt like we barely got in, like our names weren't quite on the list. But we got in.
  • We were seated at table 24, with a Brian, David, Kai, and . . . a woman who left soon after.
  • It turned out those first two people were Brian Dobson and David Nykl
  • Left 4 Dead freakin' cleaned house.
  • Tom Kenny taught us how to do the Spongebob Squarepants laugh.
  • Tom Kenny is a freakin' funny guy even when he's not Spongebob.
  • This award show was the first time Tom Kenny had ever won an award for doing Spongebob.
  • Hayao Miyazaki won a lifetime achievement award tonight.
  • Talked with a South African guy at our table a lot. He wants to move to Vancouver. Such is our city...
  • Kicking myself for not bringing my camera.

I can't wait 'til next year. Hopefully we can go again, though Adam's contact (the organizer of the event) might not be there next year. Oh, also spoke to her a bit near the end - she's wonderful.

Thanks again for the hook-up, Adam.

Parents Goin' On A Trip . . .

The mother and the stepfather are hittin' up a cruise ship today. I get to drive them to the airport. Should be good for them . . .

Wanna know what's even cooler, though?

Their cruise ship stops at Shadow's island for a day!

Here's hoping they find each other - 'cause I've got birthday presents for them to deliver! Bwahaha . . . ahh, should be fun.

Other than that . . . watched "Deadliest Warrior" again. In general that show pisses me off because there are so many factors they don't take into account, and the first two episodes seemed to be so adamant about "speed and technique versus strength". So the Apache Warrior killed the Gladiator, and the Samurai killed the Viking. So naturally, when they had "Spartan versus Ninja", I was already getting concerned as the voice-over mentioned "speed versus strength" and "brain versus brawn" . . . . that's garbage.

So I'm glad that the Spartan won this simulation. About damn time.

Alright, I'm still a little snuffly. I'll be off now. If anyone wants to know, I'm past the worst of the sore throat and have now transitioned to yellow mucus/phlegm. I'd call that progress.

Crap, I think I got sick

Sore throat a couple days ago. Sore throat and dry cough yesterday.

Crap.

Also, this is retarded . . . alright, so you know those Neo Citrin drink crystals, right? Dissolve in water, enjoy? I was looking at them after work last night, trying to find the one for sore throat . . . regular lemon, just runny nose and coughing and sneezing . . . . . oh, there it is!

Cherry flavoured. The hell?

Even the generic $1.50 less version (the one I got) was cherry flavoured for sore throat and dry cough! The hell?! Did they just feel lemon had to have its niche, so any other symptoms required its own flavour of drink crystal? Cherry . . . it's pushin' my comfort zones, gotta say.

Beyond that . . .

. . . . . typed up my Sakura-Con FUNimation report finally, have that on the Official World. I now consider my Sakura-Con reporting done, not counting my own experiences at the con in general. That's less offical, though.

Also, Valkyria Chronicles DLC - extra missions that are FRIGGIN' HARD! Totally worth it, though.

Anyway, probably shouldn't stay up too late. That's probably part of why I'm sick now.
