Hi I'm Dranzerstorm
You may remember me as a regular contestant on the caption battle contest.
Welcome to Retro Retrospective, my world dedicated to the old guard of the Otaku world; expect some reviews of the old & obscure, and in-depth geeky knowledge with the occasional top ten and I now have a logo.

Little info about me
Well I'm British and I'm in to all things animated and nostalgia.
I've grown up with every cartoon going and have watched hundreds of anime.
Oh and to answer a question I was asked once, no I don't wear glasses in real life, I would wear Loke's sunglasses though.

Midori no Hibi Review

If there was ever a more 00s anime than this, I've yet to see it.

Seiji is a delinquent, the toughest in school and famed for a super powerful right hand but his love life is non existent. Midori is a rich yet shy girl who wants to confess her undying love for Seiji but can't find the words, until one day, Seiji awakes with his right hand having become a mini Midori making her appearance look like a living hand puppet.
This bizarre event leaves the real Midori in an endless sleep, but Midori with her one true love embraces the situation leading to an adorable romance that may bring the nicer side out of Seiji, how will the new couple cope especially trying to hide the little Midori from the world.
I wouldn't try to understand the logistics that went into the fact that Seiji's right hand became a living girl, it's anime and it's very 00s.
The manga goes much further bringing more bizarre scenarios into the fray turning the cute romance into a harem, while the anime does go crazy with the setup, it's able to dial enough back to keep the core elements of being a romance series, that strength is held together by Seiji and Midori being made for each other and very strongly written.
The casual nudity is a bit off putting and there are one or two subplots that need ironing out but other than that, it isn't too bad.
I don't remember the dub being any good, the original Japanese voices shine here so the dub is kinda redundant.
Final Verdict: If you can turn off your brain from trying to work out how this universe works, you'll find a sweet romance anime.

18 of the Weirdest Music Anime Concepts

Over in Europe we have a music competition known as the Eurovision song contest where competing countries send some of the most weird and unusual musical performances ever. Over in Japan, you get some of these unusual music anime, some of these entries cover more than one title.

1. Adding Ice Skating to your Idol show from Pretty Rhythm Aurora Dream
The pretty franchise has always been capable of adding several different elements to it's idol shows, the Prism Stars combine song and dance with fashion and figure skating to set the standard that saw it become a major franchise and be followed up with ever more crazy stunts and rainbow coloured performances.

2. The Magical Wardrobe to the Virtual Stage from Aikatsu
Aikatsu definitely has the best system for stage costumes as well as staging in general, by inserting cards into the Aikatsu system will allow each idol to emerge on stage fully ready to sing. Aikatsu Planet pushes this further by having live action actresses enter the Aikatsu World.

3. Reviving Classical Composers as Super Powered beings from ClassicaLoid
Imagine Beethoven as a hammy, gyoza obsessed bishy, imagine Mozart with flashy pink hair, imagine Liszt as a big booba anime girl, imagine them having everything from mecha and earth shattering powers then you get this anime.

4. A Mixed Genre Pop Group Performing on the Moon from Wandaba Style
The often forgotten comedy about an eccentric boy genius using the cleanest of technologies to get a pop band to perform on the moon is every bit as funny as you can imagine.

5. Blues Band chasing money for a Concert Hall on their Daikon Field from Nerima Daikon Brothers
Hideaki, Mako and Ichiro form the Nerima Daikon Brothers, a group of Daikon Farmers with loose family ties attempt to make money for their own concert hall with very wacky schemes plaguing them every time.

6. Zombie Idol Group from Zombieland Saga
So how to revitalise a declining idol business? Bring in zombie girls to make your band, because why not?

7. American Idol on Mars from Carole & Tuesday
While the plot to this anime is mostly played straight, you still get all the most bizarre performances in the talent show Mars Brightest, an obvious homage to talent shows. Highlights include the Mermaid Sisters, Fire Brothers and OG Bulldog

8. Ancient Marble Head Statues as Idols from Sekko Boys
Take the statues or Mars, Saint Giorgio, Hermes and Medici and make them a boyband because why not?

9. Music is a Super Power from Symphogear
In what I consider the dumbest anime franchise of all time, Symphogear combines idol singing with super armour powered fights with alien beings.

10. Isekai'd a Chinese Military Strategist into modern day Japan to become a night club legend from Ya Boy Kongming
Zhuge Liang or Kongming if you prefer gets a second chance in modern Japan and ends up becoming a legend in Shibuya with his sick rapping skills and using his tried and tested strategies to maximise the popularity of his nightclub and singing partner.

11. Turning Pilots into Idols from Idol Defence Force Hummingbird
This is what happens when you allow private companies to run your military, this unique experience actually offered a role to a very important voice actress, more in an upcoming review.

12. Singing is a Super Power from Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch
It actually isn't that weird for mermaids to use their voices as a power, what is weird is them becoming human idols to do it complete with idol dresses.

13. Becoming a Teen Idol by Magic from Creamy Mami
Quite big in the 80s when your average ten year old transforms into a teen Idol Singer.

14. Becoming a Teen Idol by Magic because Cancer from Full Moon Wo Sagashite
Arina Tanemura's take on the genre, features a girl given the chance to make her dreams come true because she's going to die soon. It gets worse from here.

15. Becoming Teen Idols by Magic to Save the Fairy Tale World
The much younger girls in Lilpri take on the forms of three classic teenage princesses to make the world happy again.

16. It's Supposed to be a Mecha Series from Macross
Nothing about Macross' mecha content is ever remembered it's always the idols and rock bands, I'm fairly convinced this was also a rhythm game at one point.

17. Liberating the Japanese People Using Smexy Male Rockstars from Bakumatsu Rock
I'm not making that up, a rock band is being used to liberate Japan from the Tokugawa Shogunate.

18. Singing Summons the Rain from The World is Still Beautiful
Whenever Nike sings about a tender rain, it absolutely pours it down.

Cautious Hero Review

Slowly getting back into anime again after a staggered couple years, next up is the Cautious Hero.

In the realm of the gods, it is their duty to summon heroes to save worlds, the goddess of healing Ristarte, tasked with saving the S level difficult Gaeabrande summons a once in a life time hero in Seiya with unbelievably high stats but with only one issue, he's cautious to the absolute extreme, he doesn't trust anyone, he pretty much muscles his way into being trained by several gods breaking a few along the way, reduces his travelling companions to bag carriers and ultimately causes more destruction than even the enemy.
The lengths Seiya will go to is a source of frustration for Ristarte but is it enough against such a powerful foe as the demon lord?
I found with this series, the development in the villains was sacrificed to give full coverage to what Seiya is capable of along with a mixture of sexy, thirsty goddesses in tow and how useless Ristarte is in the grand scheme of things but one thing it did do right was the finale; when its revealed why Seiya acts so cautious, it suddenly completes his character and gives Ristarte some much needed redemption when she spent most of the series going through a silly comedy routine. Thankfully the jokes on show don't out stay their welcome and the anime can still keep it's action set pieces.
Dub is annoying, don't watch it.
Final Verdict: A solid entry among the endless isekai anime. The thristy moments from goddesses can be distracting and the villains have little to no development but is saved by the finale bringing the story to a great climax.

Chio's School Road Review

The fact that I'm finishing anime is a good sign of my recovery from mental health issues, so let's dive back into reviews.

Chio describes herself as below average, she hates standing out and would find life more peaceful if she was left alone with her best friend and able to play western video games without drawing attention to herself, only problem is, those factors tend to make an average walk to school all the more strange as her gaming logic gets her out of the wild situations she finds herself in.
Chio's School Road isn't really the best at standing out, much like the character Chio, it presents itself as average but still gets a good laugh out of me through the unique scenarios.
The other problem is, episode one is the best episode, placing it's set pieces too early leaving nothing in reserve, I don't see many people finishing the series beyond the 2nd or 3rd episode let alone seeing the full 12 episode run.
Not seen the dub but would suit a dub.
Final Verdict: a pleasant anime with very little ambition but entertaining at least.

Worst Anime Ever: a Compilation

Last month, I revisited the topic of the worst anime ever following the fallout over High Guardian Spice; I asked people from the Minamicon Facebook group to provide examples of their worst anime to see what really is terrible.
At the end, I'll share my thoughts on my own top ten of terrible. If I miss an obvious one to begin with, there's a good chance it's in the Top Ten.
Again big thank you to the Minamicon Group.

Mars of Destruction
A laughable attempt at making a serious anime making every attempt to be shocking feel like a funny episode of South Park.

Twinkle Nora Rock Me
A creator's attempt at making his own waifu with no budget to actually animate properly.

Ultimate Teacher
I don't actually mind it but I can tell it's not exactly improving with age, it's defining feature is being declared unreviewable by Anime Abandon.

Fractale
Not seen it, the synopsis makes it sound like a weaker Dot Hack Sign and that's hardly a compliment.

Laws of the Sun
I actually had to look it up, it has an entry on the bad films wiki. Not seen it.

Hanoka
Wait, this is an actual anime? DeviantArt has better quality than this.

Mobile Suit Gundam: G no Reconguista
Considering the mouthful I had to splutter to even pronounce the title, I'm already dreading it, not seen it.

Chargeman Ken
It came back into the Public eye recently, it's definitely on the funny bad scale.

Hell Girl
Mostly indifferent to it's existence, never really interested me.

Apocalypse Zero
God help you if you watched this, you must have a steal trap mentality.

Dragon Half
I don't actually mind it, I don't see it as the legendary comedic gem it used to be since better comedies now exist.

Ex-Arm
How? How are we still producing dodgy cgi animation in 2021, there is no excuse for such a train wreck, glad I've not seen it.

Ikki Tousen
I get the design aesthetics and the fight scenes were well done but why it has to be a romance of the three kingdoms thing is beyond me, a wrestling match plot is easier to follow.

Dragonaut: The Resonance
Not seen it, looks fine I guess, probably a C tier at best.

Nazca
Probably more famous for having a cameo in the Malcolm in the Middle opening, not seen it but the art style is a little on the cheap side.

Divergence Eve and Misaki Chronicles
Both are pretty dull despite looking vibrant.

World of Narue
The early days of Anime News Network dubbed this the worst anime of all time, while that title has been fought over these days it doesn't excuse the fact that this is the most generic romance anime of all time.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
I hope the person who decided to make Endless Eight got fired.

Tsukihime
Not seen it, being the same creators as the Fate series I doubt story is going to be anything special.

Akikan
Peak levels of scrapping the barrel here, because someone really wanted to have sex with a can of soda.

Kampfer
Kampfer would've been good if not for the direction choices, a well made anime with a great plot with the absolute worst execution.

Ninja Scroll
It was always high on the must watch checklist for early otaku until effort was made to get better titles, it's barely watchable now.

Mad Bull 34
Pretty much a visual representation of every sexist trope imaginable along with plenty of things you can't unsee.

Violence Jack
On any other list, this would be top 10 terrible but then I remember it's by Go Nagai which makes it automatic terrible.

Landlock
Found it very meh.

Angel Cop
I found that the dub made this more legendarily terrible.

Odin
Honestly this is the only anime I've seen which I've constantly forgotten straight away after watching it.

Terra Formers
This is the other terrible cockroach anime. The other is Twilight of the Cockroaches.

Garzey's Wing
Like Angel Cop, it's very much the dub that made this one so terrible.

Ai Tenchi Muyo
I found Tenchi Muyo War on Geminar alot worse, at least the original characters come back.

Neo Yokio
It looks like it was made by bootleggers.

AD Police
I'd recommend watching Bennett the Sage's review for this one, he gets the point across better than I can.

MD Geist
I can write a ten page essay on why this is terrible but in short, the head of an American anime distributor loved it so much that we had to wait quite a while for decent anime.

Goku Midnight Eye
Someone who watched Golgo13 and thought "how can I make this character worse?"

Fushigi Yuugi Eikoden
I never enjoyed Fushigi Yuugi to begin with, knowing there's a sequel doesn't make it any better.

School Days
The only reason it doesn't make my top ten is because the lead got what he deserved.

Battle Programmer Shirase
I had to look this up and yikes, a dead inside protagonist in a yikes relationship.

Cutie Honey Universe
Biggest insult to a franchise since the Cowboy Bebop netflix series.

Daitarn 3
Pretty much the reason why Tomino made Gundam as this Mazinger clone fails to even compare to Go Nagai's series.

Straight Title Robot Anime
An experiment that never caught on.

Virus Buster Surge
The most fascinating thing about this anime is the animation, chiseled men that can pass as JoJo characters and women who look like they ate a coat hanger.

Burn Up
It's the only anime I can point to that showcases every era of anime from the violent to the ova era to the decent to the utterly terrible in that order.

Ghost Stories
So bad that the Japanese asked the dubbing team to make it better by any means necessary.

Eye Shield 21
Anyone wanting a generic sports anime should watch this.

Ninja Slayer
Not seen it, looks like another terrible experiment.

Bounty Dog
Another anime I forgot immediately after watching it.

Abunai Sisters
Someone tried to make an anime using the Bratz doll art assets and made this abomination.

Onegai Twins
A lesson on how not to write a sequel.

Now I've gone through a number of other suggestions, what do I consider the top ten worse?
Well you'll be surprised by my selections.

10. X/1999 and Movie
I have a bit of a love hate relationship with Clamp and X is a great example of a story stuck in writers block hell with no official end in sight. The anime itself is terribly written.

9. Spiral Suiri no Kizuna
Speaking of terribly written, my god, I've never seen such a poorly thought out plot in my life, there are Shonen Jump plots less convoluted than this anime.

8. Psychic Force
A fighting anime that is outright insulting with it's plot as it can't even get it's basic DNA right, nor can you make an overlord named Keith intimidating. (Apologies to all Keiths I know)

7. Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-Chan
This was actually a former number one worst anime but in retrospect, I rated it lower for two reasons, it's better made and the protagonist always gets punished, doesn't excuse it from having one of the worst plots in anime.

6. Diabolik Lovers
An example of the type of uncomfortable harem anime can become if given to the wrong writer, but then again this is the same group that did Mars of Destruction and one other infamous terrible anime.

5. Kill Me Baby
The title says everything really, an unfunny one joke comedy of basically the joke character pissing off someone who can snap your neck in seconds.

4. Jungle De Ikou
Aged worse than milk in a sauna, deeply uncomfortable and unfunny, the Movie 43 of anime.

3. Idol Densetsu Eriko
The most depressing shojo anime of all time.

2. Skelter Heaven
Most people would agree that this anime is hands down the worst of all down and many would agree as well.

1. De:Vedasy
But this anime is so much worse, the anime is an Evangelion ripoff but took every bad element from it and some how made it worse.

There you have it, a run down of some really terrible anime as suggested by myself and the minamicon convention facebook group.
