FLCL Week 2020 (Part 2 of 3)

EDIT: I WAS ABOUT TO UPLOAD THE SEASON 2 BREAKDOWN BEFORE I CAME UP WITH THIS IDEA!

One thing that I do think could be used regarding the music is the album “Rock Stock & Too Smoking” by The Pillows. I know it may seem biased since it is one of my favorite albums, but stay with me for a beat.
If you look at the cover image for FLCL: Progressive, it details the letters “FLCL: Progressive” in black text on a yellow background. It also features Hidomi, Haruko, and Jinyu with Hidomi sitting with a closed-off disposition on top of Jinyu’s car while Jinyu is in the driver’s seat and Haruko is standing up while leaning on the car. This image is on a solid yellow background.

The cover image for season 2 bears a strong striking resemblance to that of the album cover for “Rock Stock & Too Smoking” by The Pillows. The text is large and solid black, the background is yellow, and on the lower right corner you see three men, two of them holding rifles with smoke coming off of the barrel and they stand on either side of one man with his hands in his pockets. The position of the men on the cover would also coincide with the position of the characters on the image cover since Hidomi is sitting between Jinyu and Haruko who both wield guitar/bat weapons.

I think the parallel imagery would be nice, and the album also has a few songs with “Rock Stock” versions, featuring more campy upbeat remixes of songs such as “I Want to Become a Sullivan,” “Strange Chameleon,” and “Swanky Street.”
I think some of these songs would fit the scenes; while I am not too familiar with the lyrics I think the overall musical scheme of the “Rock Stock & Too Smoking” album would help fit the look of season 2.

Personally I think it’d be pretty hype to hear Sawao Yamanaka’s shouting in “I Want to Become a Sullivan” as a backdrop of the fight scene from episode 4. I would also laugh at hearing “Mr. Droopy” either as an instrumental or a lyrical backdrop to some of the more laid-back and silly scenes with Ide or Mori. Finally, I would have loved to hear the song “Scarecrow” at some point. While it may not carry the same emotional weight that “Thank You, My Twilight” had, I think it would help build up an emotional climax if you hear the entire song from beginning to end. Maybe for the scene where you watch Hidomi and her mother in either the manga scene or their dialogue in the final episode build up to the final chorus of the song.

If you haven’t guessed, I’m urging you to listen to “Rock Stock & Too Smoking” by The Pillows. It’s an awesome album and if you like Japanese Indie Rock music, there would be at least one song in that mix that you would enjoy. Also, the music videos are pretty cool.
