FLCL Week 2020 (Part 2 of 3)

Episode 2: Freebie Honey

Ironically, the title of the second episode “Freebie Honey” is also the name of a song from The Pillows’ “Penalty Life” album titled “Freebee Honey.” The spelling differs but generally covers the same intent. Unfortunately we don’t get an awesome soundtrack for the dream sequence like we did with episode 1, but instead we are treated with a drastically different performance by Xanthe Huynh as Hidomi. Instead of appearing to be stoic and lifeless the performance is effervescent and cheerful, even though the words she is speaking are extremely grim and detail some really disturbing images that you see.

(1)Freebie Honey-
The first full song doesn’t appear until about 60% of the episode, and it kicks off the action scene between Jinyu and Raharu. I personally haven’t heard this song very much, but from what I heard from this episode, it does seem pretty sick. Here’s the chorus:

Reaching up for the highest level
even if I get hurt
Maybe I'm gonna be a free bee now
I'm not scared anymore

(I got this one off of flashlyrics.com)

The lyrics don’t really give too much weight to the context of the brief battle, and it ends naturally before the full fight scene is over. Some of it sounded a bit rushed, but it was still fun to hear.

(2) Unrising Sun/The Sun That Will Not Rise (Fool on Cool)-Depending on where you find it, the song would either be titled “Unrising Sun” or “The Sun That Will Not Rise.” Personally, I find that this song and a few others were overused, and I honestly could not tell the difference between them. This song has a very melodious and calm structure to it.
The lyrics sort of reflect the calm nature, and the chorus is very relaxing.

You leaving when I sleep
You living in my dream
I singing when you sleep

I haven’t heard the full song outside of the episode, and honestly I don’t like hearing it in the episode, even though it does sound like an interesting song.
