I stopped dead, skidding in my steps as I saw Ice fall. I knew he hadn't been okay, d*mmit!
I snatched at Abby's sleeve, 'causing her to stop too, and ran off to Ice's aid. He had been bleeding really badly...Why had we made him run?!
I growled, deep in my throat, and felt Kai's hand on my shoulder. I looked up at him and he gestured for me to move aside.
He looked at Ice's bleeding, unconscious body with eyes that had seen it all before. They were so sad...I could see as his eyes flashed, unfocused, remembering all of the people he had seen fall like this. "...I've seen worse." he said at last, ripping off bits of his shirt to place on Ice's wounds, every one that wasn't too serious.

bby kneeled down next to him, "Um...Please, let me do this. I'll help. It's not the most important thing to do...right? So let's save time." she stuttered nervously. Still shaky from all of the glares Kai had been shooting her way, probably. I didn't see anything out of place with that, though. Kai had always been suspicious about the nice people.
He looked at her hesitantly, but looked too tired to yell. "Right-o, girlie. Here," he handed her the bits of his torn shirt, directing her where to put them and how tightly, "Don't get me wrong," he reminded her, as soon as she started, "I'm only letting you because you did a bang-up job on Pierce and you can't screw this one up even if you tried."
He looked at me, sighing, his eyes weary, "Hurry," his voice was dead, "You have the vial I gave you earlier, right?"
I froze, remembering where I put it, then nodded, "Yeah." I fished it out of my back pocket, and tossed it to him.
Kai nodded, "Thank you. This'll only heal his worst wounds, but...it's better than nothing." he poured a little into Ice's mouth.
"Will that really help?" a quiet, worried new voice asked, and we all looked over to see Nanuke, staring down at her bloody mate.
Kai smiled reassuringly, finally dragged out of his thoughts. "Yeah, of course. He'll live for sure. Just make sure he doesn't stress his scars for the first hour after he wakes up. They'll be very volatile." He stepped out of the way so that Nanuke could get a better look at the wounds that were already starting to heal.
Abby finished quickly and stood up beside me, "Will he really be alright?" she asked worriedly.
I smiled, nodding, assured now that Kai had snapped out of it, "Yeah. Worked on you, didn't it?"
Ice slowly opened his eyes, and I looked at the group that was already long gone, the only one waiting for us was the guard, Ennis. I hoped for a moment that the group would get on okay without us.

I growled, low and dangerous in the back of my throat. So. Pierce had a pet bird? Tch. Whatever. I knew he's wise up and get a woman one day, but watching him hug her just succeeded in pissin' me off.
I pretended it was because we were only a few yards from the mansion territory now. Miss Vana, if that was her name, was waiting there.
"Hey, Red! This th' place?" I ran up to our redheaded escort, and grinned, trying to shake off my jealousy. He nodded at me, smirking. "You ready to run?" I nudged his shoulder playfully. Pity he couldn't stick around. He could've been okay, in my book.
He gave me a look of determination, "Nope. 'May never be ready t' run away from my problems, mate. Not anymore." He walked a little faster, then called to the group, "Gather yer wits, kiddies! We're arrivin', and th' ones who don't think are th' ones tha' don't live! Look alive!" He gave a stern look to everyone with that warning.
I didn't understand his first comment, "What? Whaddya mean, Red? You're losin' me." I caught up to him.
He gritted his teeth, "I ain't leavin' ya, Mate. Call it guilt, pity, whatever ya like, but I'm fightin' with you lot. I owe it t' all th' halfer's I've doomed." He grinned sheepishly, "Now, grab th' ones who can fight an' put 'em in the front lines--jus' behind you an' me. They'll definitely find some action when we get in. Til then, you an' I act like we're jus' bringin' in new 'pets'. I saw yer acting, an' ya got th' guard act down, so keep it up. Put yer hat back on--Giovanna never lets 'er guards' hair grow out, so it'll give ya away." he shrugged off my stolen jacket, shoving it down on my head, "'Ere. Take this back, too. Everyone knows me, they'll think I got inta a town scuffle, but the less they see o' you, mate, th' better."
I opened my mouth, then closed it, then opened it again, finally ready to say something, "...Thanks, Red." I smiled, "You're all right."
He tried to stand a bit taller, and in the small light the clouds let in, I could see sporadic freckles on his lightly tanned face, "'Name's Ennis. Remember it, an' maybe we'll meet again, mate."
I smirked, "Ennis(*coughs*Del Mar?*coughs* XD), you say? Well, My name's Jack(*coughs*Twist*coughs* XD Kai, yer a bad liar.), but calling me Kai works fine, too. Besides, I think 'Red' has a nice ring to it." I grinned shamelessly. I was a sucker for classic movies, after all. I would have been Jack instead of Ennis anyway...Even if I hadn't traumatically terrified of tire irons after that movie. (-*Kai is a hardcore Brokeback Mountain fan*-)
Ennis seemed to catch on because he grinned, "Ya don't say?" then looked down, shaking his head, and putting a hand over his heart, and, looking for all the world like he was heartbroken, began, "Jack, I swear--"
We probably could have spoken for hours like that, but the group suddenly bunched up, and Ennis looked back that them and yelled, "Look like prisoners! No smirking, growling, or funny faces! An you, Kai," he elbowed me into place, "List'n mate, keep yer mouth shut, and act like ya hate bein' here. They'll jus' think yer a newbie who was forced inta this job like me an' a few o' the others." I nodded and stood tall, fitting my think hair into the uniform's cap, and throwing my jacket on.
We both stood tall as Ennis stormed up to the entrance and kicked the door open, "Honey, I'm home!" he called walking in and motioning for all of us to file in.
There was only one guard at the door, a big, mountain of a man who had fists like turnips and eyes as beady as a hawk's. He greeted us with a stiff nod, "Ennis. Shut your mouth before Giovana has me rip it off. You know I don't want that." he warned carefully.
Ennis waved it off, "Yeah? Glad t' see yer in a good mood, Nancy."
The guard sighed, "Vance, Ennnis. My name is Vance Vincent, remember?"
Ennis shrugged, "Yeah, yeah." He lead us forward until we were out of the guard's sight, then looked back at us, "I can probably show you where they are-- but all of the guards'll be in there, tryin' t' break 'em in. They may, 'r may not, have collars on, so they may 'r may not go batshit crazy on ya. Ya 'ave two choices: attack Giovana an' the guards first, or get t' yer friends. If ya git th' guards outta th' way, yer friends'll probably be a lot safer, but, it's up t' you."
Everyone looked around, trying to decide who would decide, and th' Shadow guy finally stopped growling obscenities and stood forward and said, "Let's just knock out anyone in our way and get Giovana first. I will get Echo back safely."
The hyena-girl nodded, "I agree. If we knock her out first, we'll eliminate half of our entire ordeal."
I shrugged, "I'm cool with whatever, kiddies. But, if we're gonna go, let's go on now." I glared at the guards that wander through the intersecting hallways who sneered at the halfers, "I think I'm ready to kick some pompous-guard arse, myself, right 'bout now." Pierce nodded violently, walking over to join me, the bird quickly following after. I resisted to 'miss' a guard and hit her instead and grinned at the though of being near Pierce again.
Ennis looked over all of us, "So have ya agreed?"
Most of the group nodded, and a few cheered, so Ennis nodded, "Right-o, mates. Keep left, an' you'll find the Vana brat. Go crazy." he stepped out of the way, as the halfers stampeded by, and reached into his pocket to grab a dagger. He sauntered over to me, grinning, "'Think I'll hang back with you m'self, mate."
"Fine by me, Red." I nodded.
Suddenly, Pierce froze and his eyes widened, and he called out urgently, "Shadow!"
The back wolf was immediately beside us, he growled, still bitter, I guess, "What?"
Pierce pointed behind us, "Somewhere, where, gods know, but I heard her scream! Echo. Look for her, I think she's in trouble!" he said quickly, and, in an instant, all malice Shadow had toward us vanished, and he was just a worried young boy as his ears pricked up and he nodded, running off before we could say another word.
I stretched my arms, and tensed myself, "C'mon. Let's go find this Vana woman." I smirked, and ran off, feeling Red, Pierce, and even Abby trod off after me.

I was amazed tht it was Shadow who had spoken up. "He's on their side? After nearly killing him, he's on their side? No, Shadow, I think that's called guilt. Most people face it often. Oh...and, do something bout it? Oh, you bet I will." I rolled my eyes, using the arm that wasn't supporting Abby to give Kai a whole-hearted hug. "I'm so glad that you still care about the people you meet. Keep it up, and never lose hope." And, that was what I was going to say. At least I didn't have to tell him that later. I looked back at Shadow, "Consider it done."
Shadow's eyes flashed with anger, and he drew himself up, tensing and about to strike.
As soon as Shadow reeled back to hit me, I stepped in front of Kai, pushing him back a little, sending Abby back with him, ensuring that both of them didn't get touched in this dispute.
My eyes slipped over to Kai, who was grinding his teeth, his hair fading in from an off-brown-white, and an angry blackish-brown. Trying so hard no to lose control and fight back, and supporting Abby gently as her eyes tried to focus and she yawned. Nope. Not awake yet.
If it did magange to hit me, I didn't quite know what I would do. This was Shadow. I didn't have anything against Shadow, really. Shadow was Ice's Kai, basically. A long lost brother who had been assumed dead. Ice wasn't a bad guy, so Shadow couldn't be much worse.
I would take it like a man, and talk it out when Shadow calmed down, I had decided. I stood tall, ready to be struck, when suddenly, an arm roughly grabbed Shadow's. "Shadow. Cut the act, you know best out of all of us that not all humans are evil." Ice's voice rang out with authority, and, when I looked over, surely enough he was there.
I sighed in relief as he looked over Kai and I, assesing what had happened. His eyes flashed with understanding as he spoke, sighing, and looking directly at Kai, and not backing down even as Kai's eyes faded to black as he began to calm down. "He's been upset sense he learned they took his girlfriend." his voice was commanding, and once more I understood why he was the alpha. At the sound of this tone, Shadow stopped struggling to hit me, or get to Kai, he just settled for glaring relentlessly at the silver-headed octopus who was relaxing, and comforting the confused, dazed Abby.
Nanuke ran up to us, looking thouroughly embarassed at Shadow's actions. "I'm sorry, Shadow's usually not like this," she insisted. "He's usually the one to stand up for humans." she immediately grabbed Shadow from Ice's grip and commenced lecturing, dragging him off away from us. I waved at them, hoping that Shadow wouldn't think I was being saracstic.
Ice loooked back at Kai, and I did, too. I saw him in time for him to smile, "It's alright. I came here expectiing eons worse, over eons less than talking to our kind escort, over there." he smiled a soft smile that had been extracted directly from my childhood as he threw in the word 'kind'. Hell bent on making the man seem like a good guy.
Ice smiled a little bit in return, "So you don't hold it against Shadow?" he asked, clearly relieved.
Kai shook his head, "Not at all, I would be even worse in his situation...Ice, was it?" he extended his hand.
Ice looked a little taken aback, but reached ot ans shook his hand, "Yeah. That's me. Thanks, Kai."
"It's nothing." Kai nodded, looking a little embarassed at being thanked, he looked down at Abby and guided her over to me. "She's waking up more every secong, Piercy. Apparently she woke up when you dropped her on the snow, though. She's been muttering, and she doens't like me much." he smiled sheepishly.
I looked down at Abby, smiling a bit, "Haha, seems inevitable that most wouldn't like you, Kai. Too bad for you." I stuck out my tongue, "But, she's really nice, so I'm sure we can convince her that you're not too horrible."
Our conversation was cut off by a thinkly accented, "'Ey! We're almost 'ere! Ready yerselves, 'cause it migh' not be pretty!"
Kai was the one to call back, "Alright! And you be ready to leave, because if you chicken out, I'll have your hide!"
"Aye, aye! I hear ya, mate!"
I raised an eyebrow as Kai looked back at me, shrugging. "We'd best get ready, then. We probably have less than an hour." he shrugged.
