In term of choosing a favorite anime because of the protagonist I think I'll go with K-On as well, Yui is simply hilarious. Oher animes I love because of the protagonist is Nodame Cantabile, Black Rock Shooter, Dengeki Daisy, Kimi ni Todoke and Skip Beat.

1978's Space Pirate Captain Harlock indeed. Its protagonist Captain Harlock is one man with the will to fight only what's in his heart without taking garbage from the morally corrupted Earth government.
