Part 8

The next day, Light and Oki scheduled their first date. Light planned it down to the smallest detail. He was to pick Oki up at her apartment at seven and from there they would take the train downtown to Shinjuku. In Shinjuku they were going to dinner and a live show. After the show they would go back to his place, watch a movie, and then he’d walk her back home. They had both agreed that it was a wonderful plan.

Light took an hour getting dressed and making sure his hair didn’t look too horrible. On the way to Oki’s apartment he realized that he had forgotten his cell phone, but, since they’d have to walk by his place to get to the train station, he figured he could pick it up on their way back through. He arrived at Oki’s a little earlier than planned and so she required a minute more to get ready.

“I’m sorry, Light. I didn’t expect you so soon. I’m not quite ready,” She said giving him a kiss. Light was fine with waiting, since a couple minutes waiting for a beautiful girl to get ready, was like an hour in heaven for him.

“Okay, I’m ready,” Oki said after a few extra minutes. “Let’s go.”

“Wonderful!” said a very happy Light. “But, before we head off to the train station we need to stop at my place. I forgot my cell phone.”

“That’s fine. I’ve wanted to get a look at your place anyway.”

They got to Light’s just as his parents were leaving to go to dinner and so he performed the customary introductions. His parents were happy to meet Oki, but equally eager to get on with their plans so they withdrew quickly. With their permission Light showed Oki up to his room.

“Well, this is it.” He said after they had both entered and he had closed the door behind them. “It’s not so fancy, but its home for now.”

“It’s nice,” Oki said, “but plain.”

“Yeah, I agree, but I just never know what to do with it. You can look around for a second if you want. I think I left my cell phone downstairs on the table,” he said as he went downstairs.

He found his cell phone quickly and returned to his room. When he reached the door, he heard Oki talking to herself. When he carefully opened the door he saw that she was looking down at his desk.

Because of Oki and everything else on his mind, Light had forgotten one more thing… his Death Note. The Death Note lay open on his desk revealing his latest page of killings...

Oki turned to him, “Oh my God, Light... ARE YOU KIRA OR NOT?!”

---

Light walked over to the desk and quickly picked up his Death Note and placed it into his desk drawer. He could feel all the blood rush to his face. Finally he was caught in his lie. He thought frantically trying to think of something to say.

“You could get in trouble snooping around like that Oki,” Light mumbled. He laughed awkwardly then stopped when he caught sight of the distress on Oki’s face. Ashamed, Light put his hands into his pockets and bit his lip. Oki covered her mouth in shock trying to understand what was going on.

“Light... Please tell me this is all part of the act. That you are only pretending to be Kira.”

When Light did not answer her, Oki started begging him, “Light… Please tell me this is all part of the cover for Misa?”

Light still said nothing as he thought to himself. “I am tired of lying to Oki about this and I want her to know the truth. Now is the time I need to come clean with her.”

While Light thought, tears started to flood Oki’s eyes. “I can’t believe I kissed you...” As if remembering a distant dream, Oki covered her mouth again and started crying even harder. Light sighed in distress and clenched his fists.

“Oki... I’m not going to lie to you any longer. I... I am Kira.” As Light finished his sentence, Oki suddenly exploded.

“You lied to me Light! You’ve done nothing but deny being Kira and now you are telling me you are Kira?! You lied right to my face! You fed me all this crap...” She shook her head violently as if she wanted to get rid of this hard, biting reality.

“Why couldn’t you just be honest with me?” Oki spat bitterly.

“Oki... please.” Light pleaded, “I knew you would not like to hear this about me. I wanted to wait for the right time to tell you, but with L...”

“L? My god!” Oki blurted out interrupting Light. “He was right about you. His suspicions about you are right! And I defended you! I defended you...” Oki hung her head so her red, tear stained face was hidden in the shadows. “Why Light… Why did you feel you had to hide this from me? I have been nothing but up front with you since we first met. I thought you were someone I could trust.”

Light reached for her hand, but Oki jerked it away before he could touch her.

“Oki, you can trust me, you know that. I only do what I do as Kira... because... honestly, how many more innocent lives should be wasted because of those reckless and heartless idiots?”

“Do not try to justify what you do by what they have done. It just serves to illustrate the fact that you are no better than the ones you are killing! I was right. You are just as heartless as they are,” Oki paused. “Your actions make you a hypocrite...” Oki muttered.

Light, hurt by this, put his hands on Oki’s shoulders and forced her to look at him.

“Do you really think I’m heartless?” Light asked gently.

Slowly, Oki took Light’s hands off of her shoulders then stepped back from him and walked towards the bedroom door. As she reached for the doorknob, she turned and looked back towards Light.

“I know you’re heartless.” With those last words, Oki opened the door and slammed it behind her.

---

The next day during lunch Light searched frantically for Oki. It didn’t take very long to find her sitting at a table with Amaterasu close by.

“Well, there she is. Do you have the guts to go up to her?” Ryuk asked dramatically.

“Shut your mouth for once, Ryuk,” Light grumbled angrily. He had every intention to talk to Oki, especially since he knew that she wouldn’t dare make a scene in the cafeteria. So, with his false confidence fading with every step, he walked up to Oki’s table and casually sat down. She stared at him blankly.

“Well look who it is...” Amaterasu sang quietly.

“What do you want, Light?” Oki asked, in a wore out tone.

Oki must be exhausted,” Light thought to himself.

“Oki, you have to hear me out. Please,” Light begged quietly.

Oki turned her blank eyes at Light.

“I don’t have a choice in the matter, do I?” she said in a monotone voice.

“Oki, I was planning on telling you, but only when you were ready for it. I wasn’t going to keep it from you forever.”

Oki casually took a sip of her juice and continued to stare at Light.

“I’m going to die soon, Light - probably in a matter of weeks… Maybe even days. How long were you going to wait until you told me? Until I was on my death bed and barely conscious?”

Light shook his head quickly.

“No Oki! I was going to tell you sooner! You have to believe me!” He pleaded, grabbing Oki’s hand. She didn’t even bother pulling it away and simply let it lie lifeless in his. Then, unable to look into Light’s eyes anymore, Oki turned her intense stare towards their now intertwined hands.

“Oki... you should talk to him...” Amaterasu pushed gently.

Oki looked at Amaterasu, and then turned her attention back to Light. “So have you and Misa figured out L’s real name yet?”

Light sat back, having been caught off guard by her question. Oki tilted her head to the side.

“That is the real reason you have her around, right? So you can find out L’s real name; so you can write it in your Death Note, right?”

Light sat there shocked at the accuracy of her questions and unable to think of anything to say.

“All your lies are becoming clear now,” Oki continued, “You played me and used me just like you are using Misa now....”

“NO! I never used you Oki,” Light exclaimed. “I…”

With a heavy sigh, Oki tore her hand from Light’s, packed up all of her books, and walked away angrily. Frustrated, Light laid his head down on the table for a minute. He jumped when a voice from behind him spoke.

“What was Oki all riled up about? I thought you guys had made up,” L said.

“None of your business L,” Light said angrily as he got up from the table.

“Fighting with each other?” L smirked, “What is wrong now? Did you tell her you would not go visit the doctor with her?” L said, mocking him.

“Shut up L,” Light said, as he brushed past L to get to his next class, but L walked with him.

“Something’s wrong Light. Something weird is going on. I can smell it.”

“Are you sure it’s not the chocolate bar shoved up your--” Light caught himself.

He no longer cared about L’s taunts. All that kept replaying in his mind was the pain that had been so visibly expressed on Oki’s face when she found out he had been lying to her about being Kira. Suddenly, L was in front of Light and the two were inches from each other. L leered at him suspiciously.

“I have information on the Kira case that is rather interesting.” L said, his eyes now sternly on Light’s.

“Be careful Light,” Ryuk warned. “Oki might have told him about you.”

“And what is that L?” Light asked, ignoring Ryuk’s warning.

“Honestly, I thought you would have heard already, seeing as you’re in the investigation with me and all,” L said – full of sarcasm.

“Spit it out L.”

L laughed and circled around Light as if he were his pray.

“I know who Kira is...”

Light swallowed hard and faced L, scrutinizing his face for any signs of foul play. How could he possibly know whether L was toying with him or if Oki really had told him the truth?

“Oh? And who might that be?” Light’s muscles tensed as he prepared to get into a brawl with L.

L laughed and put his hand on Light’s shoulder.

“Hate to break it to you buddy, but it’s your girlfriend.”

Light stared at L and slowly shook his head. “No... It can’t be Oki.”

L’s eyebrow rose up again. “Oki?!” He smirked again.

Light was so upset due to the fight him and Oki were having that he did not immediately realize that he just revealed the true nature of his relationship with Oki to L. He jerked away from L’s hold.

“It is not Oki!” Light exclaimed in her defense. “Anyway… You said it yourself when you first met her. She does not have the correct personality traits to be a viable suspect.”

“Umm… yes I did say that,” L replied sliding his hands into his pockets. But I was not referring to Oki.”

Light still not in his right mind retorted angrily. “Then who the hell are you referring to?”

“Well Misa of course. I mean, she is your girlfriend, right?” L asked.

Light finally managed to process L’s confusing dialogue and realized the true extent of the mistakes he had made. “How the hell did he know I was seeing Misa?” He thought to himself.

“You’re probably wondering how I knew you were seeing Misa.”

Light glared at L. “I have a good idea,” he replied with a grim face.

“Tell me Light, who do you think Kira is?”

“How the hell am I to know? You’re the detective here - you figure it out! I have my own problems right now!” Light snarled before walking away.

“Hmm… Maybe Oki and I should have a talk, this is getting very interesting,” L grinned thoughtfully.
