Part 9

After classes had finished, Light walked frantically around campus looking for Oki.

“I have to find her. I have to get her to understand I was not using her. I would never do that to her,” Light muttered under his breath. “Why can’t she understand what Kira is trying to do…? What I am trying to do? I only want to make a better world for us… for her. I have to get her to understand or…”

“Or what?” Amaterasu asked. She had been hovering behind Light who now turned quickly to face her. “Will you write her name in your Death Note to save your own skin? Will you kill Oki to keep L from finding out you are, what he thinks you already are?”

“Where is Oki, Amaterasu?” Light shouted, tired and angry about getting lectured.

“Why do you want to know? She wants nothing to do with the likes of you - a liar and a heartless killer. You told her that you would protect her from the pain of the world, and yet you are the one that has brought her the most pain. You should be glad I do not have two Death Notes like Ryuk, for you would surely be dead by now.” Amaterasu turned away as if to leave.

“Stay away from Oki,” she said, “or you may find yourself in a predicament you do not want to be in.”

Light stepped forward, “Ammy please! I know I did wrong by Oki. I should have never lied to her, but I was… I was afraid. I did not want to lose her. I have never felt for a girl like I feel for her. Having those feelings returned... I do not want to lose Oki… Please, Ammy I need to speak with her. I have to get her to understand this.”

Amaterasu turned and saw Light’s worried, but earnest face.

“Please Ammy. I love her as much, if not more than you.” Light said.

“You could never love her as much as I,” Amaterasu then continued walking away.

“Amaterasu! Please, I am begging you.”

Amaterasu still said nothing as she kept walking. Light sighed and hung his head.

“You know where to find her,” Amaterasu said as she was leaving, “You’re just not thinking clearly enough to figure it out.”

“Thank you Ammy, I promise to set this all straight with Oki.”

---

Light rushed off towards the bench where he had first met Oki. When he rounded the corner, he saw her lying on the ground on her side almost lifeless and barely breathing. Light moved Oki’s hair from her face as L walked around the corner and saw Light holding her in his arms. L quickly made his way to Light’s side.

“I guess she did not fit your grand plan?” L taunted.

”Go to hell, L,” Light said as he picked Oki up. “Call an ambulance and have them meet me at the front of the school!”

“And tell them what? You failed in killing your second girlfriend to hide your first?”

“Stop being a jackass L! You know what happened here! Oki’s illness is to blame. Not me!”

Light carried Oki to the front of the school, leaving L behind. She came too slightly and looked up at Light who held her securely in his arms.

“Light… I am sorry,” she managed to say to him, her voice weakened by the illness.

“Stop apologizing! You have nothing to be sorry for. I am the one who is causing you all this pain,” Light told her while looking ahead of them.

Still looking up at Light, she saw the worried look on his face. “I…”

“Please Oki, save your strength. We will have plenty of time to talk when you are better. Right now getting you to help is more important than anything in this world.” As Light drew closer to the front of the school, he could hear the sirens of the ambulance.

Before Light had managed to cross the remaining distance to the front of the school, the paramedics were rushing toward them with a stretcher in tow.

“What happened here? And who is this young lady?” One of them asked Light as he placed Oki on the stretcher.

“This is Saito Oki. She has Mesothelioma. I am not sure what happened for certain, but I am sure her illness has something to do with it. I found her passed-out on the ground.”

“And who are you?” the other paramedic asked.

“Yagami Light, I am her…” Light paused as L walked up. “I am a very good friend of hers.”

“Can you call her family for her?” the paramedic asked Light.

“She has no living family members that I am aware of, it is only her,” Light replied as Oki was wheeled in the direction of the ambulance.

“Her doctor practices at your hospital. His name is Dr. Wongfuu. Contact him, and he will be able to fill you in on Oki’s condition,” L said as he walked up beside them.

“And who are you?”

“Hideki Ryuga. I am also a very good friend of Miss Saito’s,” L answered. The paramedics nodded and started making their way out when Oki reached for Light.

“Light…” she called, trying to sit up. She was foiled by straps which held her down so Light quickly made his way to Oki’s side and took her hand into his. As he walked alongside her, he heard her say.

“Do not leave me Light.”

Light shook his head. “I will always be here for you Oki.”

The paramedics lifted her onto the ambulance and got in, but when Light tried to get in one of them stopped him.

“You cannot ride with her. You will have to meet us at the hospital.”

“But…” Light replied in a worried tone, as his hand slid from Oki’s.

“I am sorry.”

They closed the doors on Light as the ambulance sped off.

L walked up beside Light, “this makes it twice you two have gotten into an argument and twice Oki has fallen ill afterwards. I wonder if there might be a connection here.” L said in an inquisitive tone as he turned, walking away from Light.

Light was angered by L’s suggestive attitude and so grabbed him by his shoulder, jerking him back and putting them face to face.

“I am sick of you and your attitude toward mine and Oki’s relationship. Stick your nose back in the Kira case where it belongs and leave Oki out of it.” Anger laced Light’s voice.

L shrugged Light’s hand from his shoulder. “I never brought Oki into the Kira case Light. That is your fault. I have known from the start she is neither Kira nor the second Kira, but she has had something to do with Kira…” L paused to look squarely at Light’s face.

“Hasn’t she?”

Light sharply shook his head.

“Do not do this to her, L. Do not drag Oki into this because you suspect me of being Kira. I do not know how many more times I will have to tell you this, but I AM NOT KIRA!”

“What I want to know is… Does Oki know you are Kira? Or did you lie to her about it, just like you lied to everyone else?” L said as he turned to walk away.

“Leave Oki out of this, or else,” Light threatened.

“There is no ‘or else’ for you Light. You do not even know my real name. Try again my friend.”

L stepped into his car which was idling a few feet from them. Once he was seated, and the door was closed, L rolled down his window.

“Oh and… just to warn you, I will be asking Oki about Kira. I am sure we will uncover the truth soon enough.”

Smiling, L motioned for his driver to proceed, and rolled up his window as Light stood on the curb looking as if he was ready to explode.

“Damn him!” Light exclaimed as L’s car drove down the road. He quickly composed himself shaking his head.

“Now is not the time for this. I have to get to the hospital. I will deal with L later.”

---

After about an hour, Light showed up at the hospital and walked to the front counter. He stood there for a few seconds as he waited for the lady to acknowledge him.

She hung up the phone and looked up at Light with a smile.

“Hello, can I help you with something?” she asked.

“Yes, I am here to see Saito Oki. She was brought in about an hour ago.”

The lady typed something on her computer.

“Oh yes, Miss Saito. She is on the third floor, ICU room 3134.” “ICU? Was she that bad?” Light asked.

“I am sure she was, since they placed her in there.” The lady pointed at the lobby on the left.

“If you take one of the elevators over there, it will take you to the third floor. You can find out more about her up on that floor.”

“Thank you.” Light replied before making his way to the elevators.

When the doors opened, Light stepped out facing the third floor’s front desk. There was a young nurse standing behind the counter so Light stepped over to the counter.

“Hello, can I help you find someone?” She asked.

Light glanced at her name tag then smiled at her, “yes Momo, you can. I am Yagami Light. I am Saito Oki’s boyfriend. They brought her in about an hour ago. Can you tell me where I can find her?”

Momo smiled at Light, “she’s was right, you are very cute.”

Light blushed, “she?”

“Oh, before the doctor gave her the sedative to calm her, she told me you might be coming to see her. I asked her what you looked like and she told me you were very cute and your name was Light.”

Light looked down at the counter to conceal his reddened face.

“Thank you,” he said as he looked up at Momo. “Is it alright if I go see her?”

“Of course it is. But I must warn you, her brother is also visiting her right now,” Momo told him.

Light looked instantly confused. “Her… Brother?! But she has no living family.”

“Well that is what we thought but this young man came in here with proof that he was her brother, so we did not question it.” Momo told him.

“What is his name?” Light asked.

“Umm…” The nurse looked down at Oki’s paperwork, thumbing through it. When she found the relevant document she looked back up at Light. “Saito Omi is his name.” She leaned forward onto the counter and whispered to Light.

“He looks nothing like Oki and is actually kind of creepy looking. And if he is lucky, he is barely a year older then her.”

Light gave a slight chuckle. “Creepy looking… Is he about my height with dark brown hair? …Well, if he stood up straight he would he be about my height.”

“Yeah that is him,” Momo confirmed.

“L…”

“You know him?” Momo asked.

“Yeah, he is harmless… at least to Oki.”

Light looked down the hall toward Oki’s room.

“I am going to go see her now.”
