One of my main beefs with the Pokemon franchise is that there aren't a lot of cool-looking dark types. Don't get me wrong; I love Houndoom, Umbrion, and Absol to be sure. But most of the other dark types are are either flat-out ugly too freakin' weak for words! (Honestly: Sneasel? Statisticly great in its own right, but way too many ways to knock it out!)
Otherwise, I completely agree with you on the evolution deal. Complete and total crap, especially if you don't have that many people to trade with to begin with...
You have to get the fire pokemon from other games and even then there out numbered. There are way more water and normal type pokemon then anything else.

In comparison, there aren't as many fire types in the game as other types, such as water, to begin with. Once you beat the elite four, though, and can venture into the other areas more become available. Also if you check with the little girl in Sandgem town, she'll tell you there are new Pokemon available daily, if you didn't already know that.
Pokeradar is awesome too.
