Well I don't have an external hard drive so I'm glad the service pack didn't do that to my computer. o_O That would have sucked. I'm sorry you had trouble with it though.
Twisted has two external hard drives I believe. What with having enough anime and manga to last a few years. She got em for fear of losing all her iTunes music and what not as well, I believe. Too many computer issues.
I hope you get this sorted out for you. Our months of computer hell have passed but I remember them well. You may want to try getting a different anit-virus program, like Twisted mentioned.
I've heard of that. I didn't have an issues installing that on my laptop, but I imagine that must drive you a little bonkers. Well hopefully by now you've managed to get it fixed.

I'm using the freeware Avast! and it's worked beautifully so far. No more blue screens of death.

I've run several checks for viruses and other bad programs, and I've removed whatever they've found including a couple of Trojan things I think, but it doesn't seem to have helped.
I'm completely useless with computers, so I can't really say much to help out. Sorry!
Aaah, external drives are amazing. I'm glad I have one, because right after I switched to this computer the other one crashed. This computer gets constantly backed up, luckily.
