I did something like that one day when I was living down in Council Bluffs. I had a day off, a full tank of gas, and time. I found Lake Manawa and drove all the way around it. It's not a water-supply lake, but a recreational lake.

I've got that book waiting for me to read it. I have to finish Pride and Prejudice and Zombies first. My brother's been reading the series and loaned me his book. Sadly, Terry Pratchett has been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimers.

Right now I am reading A Hat Full of Sky which is the second book in the Tiffany Aching arc. I'm going to try to read all the Diskworld series as well, it should be very entertaining.
