Music in Anime (and in Video Games) is definitely a major factor. Whenever a very epic song comes on, I absolutely notice. It affects your emotions in a very real way.
Part of the reason that Miyazaki's movies are so good. Hisaishi orchestrates some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard, which goes perfectly with the movies.
