Keep Me From Falling...

(Racquel)

I flung the hair out of my eyes, agitatedly pacing the floor of my kitchen. Boredom was like a disease, ridding you of any happy thoughts. My mother picked her head up from where she was reading at the dining table.

"I think you should go get some fresh air, sweetheart, you're making me nervous." With that, she gave me a little wave, as if she were practically jumping at the idea of me leaving.

I shuffled to our back door, casting a wayward glance back at my mother. It was a good thing that she didn't catch me rolling my eyes. Our backyard wasn't really a backyard, which was the thing I loved about it. The minute I stepped onto the back porch, I headed down the stone stairs, the narrow walls around them hugging my shoulders. My footsteps echoed as my boot heels clicked on the cold ground. I loved the walk down these stairs. But it ended all too soon, and I was welcomed into a large expanse.

It was so stunning, it took my breath away every time I came here. The stones were laid in a large circle floor, spiraling tightly into the center, where a single lamppost stood. From the circle were many other staircases just like the one I had come down from only moments ago. The staircases led to other people's houses, but one of them in particular didn't. It took me up a grassy hill, the stones embedded in the dark green foliage. The incline was steep, but it was all worth it.

The end of that staircase ended abruptly, stretching out into a large field, dotted with lilies and daisies. The large oak trees welcomed me with their intertwined branches and swaying heads. In the distance, I could see the white-painted gazebo I had become so familiar with. I shielded my eyes with my hand, squinting against the sun. The gazebo was the only place I could go to escape from my life. Inside it though, was a well. A beautiful well. One of the old fashioned ones; stone, with a bucket hanging by a string from a wooden bar laid across the top.

This was where most of my coins disappeared to. I would come whenever I was having trouble, and drop my shiniest pennies into the well. I'm sure there was at least $50 dollars worth of them by now. The thing I liked most about this place was that no one else came here. Everyone figured that the stairs that led to this paradise led to a neighbor's back patio, like all the others.

Curiosity could be a good thing. Sometimes. I dug in my pocket, searching for the money I had pocketed today. My fingers hit metal, and brought the penny out. I made my usual wish - I want to meet someone who understands me. Truly understands. As the penny slipped from my fingers down into the well, I held my breath and counted the seconds until it would hit the water.

Strange. I never heard the small familiar splash. Maybe it had gotten caught on a stone sticking out? My dark hair fell over my eyes as I peered into the well. The water still glittered below, sloshing and swaying. I gripped the well edge and leaned in a little further, searching for my penny. There must have been a wet spot on the gazebo floor, because the next thing I knew, I had slipped, my feet knocking out from under me. I fell.

And fell. My teeth clenched together, waiting for the water to engulf me and take me in its arms. It never welcomed me. I never heard myself splash.
