The Beginning

I looked up at the sky, scowling as if it had done something wrong, and sniffed the air disdainfully. A bright crescent moon gazed steadily at my angry expression, and dull stars scattered across the dark purple blanket that was the sky. Everything was dark and gloomy.

It was perfect.

Closing my eyes and raising my hands, I focused on the shadows around me, looming behind objects due to the moon. They rose from the gravelly pavement of the road I was standing on, gathering around me. With a silent order the shadows sped off into the night. Some alternates were amazed at how easily controlling the shadows were, but if they weren't such fools they could have done the same thing just as quickly.

Find the others. I had told them. It was vague, but the brainless things had somehow understood. My glare turned on the ruins of a once grand city around me, skeletons of buildings like bony fingers pointing at the sky.

With a frustrated sigh, I turned around and stalked down the street. My temples pounded as I made my way into the only skyscraper in the whole city. On the outside the building looked to be in ruin as much as the rest, but the interior was furnished lavishly and had once housed many important people.

Once upon a time.

Now that time was over, and it was all because of the humans. Whatever happened in their little world occurred to us in this Alternate Realm, but it was the complete opposite. They just had to build a new city, and now ours were in ruins. The nerve!

I rode the unstable elevator up to the top floor of the hotel. At the end of a dark hallway was an open room that I walked straight into. Upon seeing a girl lying on the bed I growled involuntarily, a scary and guttural sound that made the shadows around me ripple.

I made a move to attack her, but a bright light surrounded her and I mentally cursed at myself. The damn girl just had to have had the power of light in the Alternate Realm, meaning I couldn't touch her, and nor could my shadow minions.

"You filthy brat," I spat her way, making my way towards the opposite side of the room. I plopped down on a dirt-covered love seat and glared at my human, Saracen Brooks.

"If you would just let me go..." she tried in vain.

"Not gonna happen. I'm one of the only Alternates to ever capture their humans, and you won't get away that easily," I snapped, running a hand through my long hair.

"I don't understand why you hate the humans so much," Saracen complained, picking at a manicured fingernail.

"You humans," I snarled the word, "Are making my life horrible. Anything good you mongrels do, ends up ruining everything here! I can only wish something bad happens!"

"I-I... Didn't know you felt that way," my opposite stammered, looking around the room nervously. "I'm sorry."

"I don't need your sympathy." A shadow flew in through the window then, followed by the others I had sent out.

The others are coming. The words weren't spoken aloud, but I could hear them resonating throughout my head.

What do they call themselves? I replied, knowing the words were being absorbed by the body-less shadows someway or another.

Twila, Yuki, Cyder, Vlad, and Ren. There might be more. It hissed in reply. I nodded dismissively and waved the things away. All this shadow communication was giving me a headache. I closed my eyes and rubbed my temples, attempting to clear my mind.

All of a sudden, my eyes snapped open and my head jerked upwards towards the sky. Saracen made a small gasp of fear, but I ignored her completely. Something had changed in the Alternate realm. And I knew exactly what it was.

Humans.
