That's a difficult question. I never really thought about NPCs teaching you stuff. Then again, I've been guilty of studying at Earl's Pokemon Academy for hours on end in "Stadium 2".
Unrelated: The title of your post made me think about how I decided to restart my Pokemon Yellow game. I also found a place that replaces Gameboy game batteries, so now I get to finally play all my old games after all these years.
