The two hardest parts of writing any story are the beginning and the ending. That's something my late mother taught me. Anyway, I don't think it'd be lazy if you simply started out your story the way the game starts out. If you can't come up with any other ideas, just go with the simplest solution. Of course one idea I just had while writing this comment is you could start out with your character watching a Pokemon battle on T.V. The very first Pokemon games started out with showing a little battle before the title screen came up. Heck, that's how the very first episode of the Pokemon anime even began.
