Self esteem is so based off of what society makes the ideal. A lot of what "being a girl" and dealing with self esteem has to do with looks, to the point where it realistically makes no sense. Photoshop and other photo editing programs create all the models we see on TV and in magazines, and runway models usually end up starving themselves unless they happen to have the genetic ability to be skinny as hell. Blah blah blah there are tons of documentaries made about this, no reason for me to blather on about it.
Artistically... I guess the art community also holds certain standards. And maybe just because it's the internet and the fact we can be anonymous and hurt others to empower ourselves is what lends to the negative comments. And I suppose it's human nature to strive to be the best and as quickly as possible--something that's not entirely (and realistically) possible.
LOL, I'm not totally sure I understand the concept of "Self Esteem"..I think it's really abstract, you know? I usually don't worry about what other people think AT ALL. I'm odd, and I enjoy being odd to it's full advantage! Sometimes people make rude comments about me drawing all the time. Or being nerdy and studying all the time LOL. Or wearing knee socks, leg warmers, skirts, and hippie jeans(not at the same time, thpugh. Haha.)But it doesn't bother me. I think what you said about being jealous was really interesting, though. I mean, how being jealous of someone affect how you treat them. I see that happening with people as school a lot.
