It is amusing how tofu in America is deemed as vegetarian and/or health food. People scoff at it, and then go straight to McDonald’s to eat a hamburger that is 50% soy… We like to do the same thing with turkey though; like it’s the miracle meat or something? Turkey bacon, turkey sausage… Save three calories and one gram of fat by eating turkey! Don’t be bothered by the 2000mg of sodium per slice…
Note: My sister actually had a tofurkey for Thanksgiving one year. She won’t be making that mistake again.
Yes, I see your point. I have beef with vegetarians on another ground (lame pun intended) but I see where you're going. And sometimes I think tofu meat substitutes are just ridiculous. I mean, if you really wanted to stop eating meat, why are you eating things that still taste like it? But the sad thing is that this has happened with a lot of foods over the last 100 years. I'm gonna get a little scientific here so forgive me, but the huge variety of foods that we used to eat has been dwindled down to a handful of species. There are a lot of implications in that: if a disease came and wiped out a certain crop, we'd be seriously lacking. Think potatoe famine. Is it totally unfair that vegetarians base their lifestyle on one food? Yes, but it's not an uncommon story these days either, which is even sadder.

I learned in the past couple years that 'tofu meat' products are, for some reason, really high in fat and might increase risk for cancer. So yeah... there went my tofu meat consumption. >_>;
At college, a lot of people assume that tofu is something only vegetarians would ever deign to eat. And I always have to tell them that I started eating tofu way, way before I became a vegetarian. :/

Its seems to be an American thing that people adopt a foreign food item and then mutate it into whatever they can. It becomes a fad and gets out of control. TOFU, THE NEW WONDER FOOD! IT'S A BLANK CANVAS, SO TRANSFORM IT INTO ANYTHING! [/announcer voice]

I learned this past year that drinking soy milk upsets my stomach something fierce. It's like some sort of weird reverse-lactose intolerance.
My experience with tofu is limited to miso soup, though I suspect that living with two Asians for the next two years will change that.
