He vas my ... BOYFRIEND!

lol, I'm only six movies shy of my total from last year, and there's still about a month-and-a-half remaining in 2010. brb patting myself on the back

Also, remember: Army of Darkness tonight and Star Wars trilogy on Friday! All the movies are uploaded, so just grab 'em at your convenience.

The Hustler (1961): Paul Newman might be my favorite actor, but George C. Scott is up there too. There aren't many actors who command your attention like he does. (Which is why he's the lead role in Patton.) He's a total rotten bastard in this movie, but you can't take your eyes off him because he commands your total respect, even as he's tearing you apart. What really makes him an effective villain is that he isn't mugging or melodramatic either -- he's just blunt and cruel.

Zombie (1979): One of those horror movies that totally indulges in over-the-top silliness and gore. I mean, there's a zombie fighting a shark! It looks totally ridiculous (and unfortunately the shark does not become a zombie shark), but in its own way it's kind of awesome. That is this movie in a nutshell. It's one step above a SyFy feature movie, but it doesn't pretend that isn't its place in the movie hierarchy.

Macross Frontier The Movie: The False Songstress (2009): Pretty neat reworking of Macross Frontier. There are similar plot elements, but there are also many radical changes, similar to Macross: Do You Remember Love? Don't know if they all work, but they're at least interesting and fresh. And the movie is of course gorgeous (delicious deculture). The TV series looks solid, but the movie blows it away; it's not just the extra detail and increased fluidity of the animation, but the way the scenes are shot are more imaginative as well. Definitely can't wait for the next flick.

Young Frankenstein (1974): My siblings randomly spotted this on TV yesterday, and, well, I can never resist Mel Brooks. Everything still cracks me up, even though I've seen the movie like five or six times by now, haha.

The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988): Sometimes I happen upon movies that have really low scores on IMDb, and I can't for the life of me understand why. (I consider anything below a 6.5 to be in the realm of "this movie isn't very good".) The Serpent and the Rainbow isn't a perfect movie by any means -- it glosses over a bunch of voodoo stuff and gets confusing at times, the romance made me lol and the ending is a typical horror movie conclusion. But it's a solid horror/adventure mix; nothing in this movie is any goofier than what people love in, say, the Indiana Jones movies, although this admittedly is not up to that level. Maybe I'm just easy to please, but I liked this.

On the queue for this week: Army of Darkness (1993), the Star Wars trilogy, The Lost Skeleton Returns Again (2008), How to Train Your Dragon (2010) (maybe)
