I remember watching The Abyss in one of my Earth Science classes in high school. I was expecting a disaster or just something to happen, but it builds up to...well...cheese and preaching. I'm kinda glad it didn't end up with everything going to shit, but I felt like the payoff coulda been better.
You should try looking at Splinter. It's another crappy Sci-Fi movie, but it has a decent lead actor in it, and it's amazing how much the presence of a good actor can spur mediocre actors to actually act.
