lol, that anime is a trip. There's a live action movie of it (featuring the same guy who plays L, haha), though this type of thing really is funnier in animation.

I'm very happy you're enjoying it so far. Although really, how could you go without mentioning the awesome OP? For shame.
And if you don't mind minor spoiler-ish talk... it's kinda sad that the show takes a downturn about two thirds in. I blame this mostly on Goro Taniguchi's directing, since a lot of his work tends to do that, I think. Luckily Planetes picks itself back up by the final episode.
