Let's Sakuga!

A friend of mine attended a sakuga panel at ACen, and once the panel got hosted on YouTube, he linked it on Twitter. I finally got around to watching it yesterday, and as someone who is embarrassingly ignorant about this sort of thing, I found it a compelling watch. I think every fan of animation -- not just anime, but animation in general -- should watch and learn from this. It's quite interesting. The videos are also split into nine easily digested parts if you don't have time to watch them all in one go.

Just to define: Sakuga is basically a single animator leaving a defining mark on a scene or show in general (as is the case with someone like Hiroyuki Imaishi, whose style is recognizable across Diebuster, Dead Leaves, Gurren Lagann and Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt). The sheer variety of touches and styles is remarkable, and definitely gives me a better appreciation of the medium, especially as someone who tends to pay a bit more attention to the writing and characterization side of things.

Right Stuf/Nozomi, will you marry me?

I got the first Revolutionary Girl Utena box set, and it is so very, very beautiful, both the box itself and the remastered episodes. The only time I watched the series was via grainy, ass ugly Veoh streams, so going from those to the sharp, colorful DVDs is like playing only Pong all your life, and then someone bursts into your room, tosses you a PlayStation 3 and says, "Here, play these games" and then you have Blu-Ray images giving you visual orgasms. I had to tear myself from the DVD because I have work in a few minutes. :(

But, yes, Right Stuf/Nozomi once again proves itself to be a wonderful company, and it will drive me into bankruptcy someday.

TETSUOOOOOOOOO

I have been routinely waking up at 7 a.m. lately. This is horrible. The Town (2010): Pretty solid crime flick. I don't think there's much here that's different fro...
