i totally agree with this observation. becoming blind to other artists and bands because of a devotion to one particular person/group is such a tragic thing. there are far too many good musicians out there for people to be just listening to a handful of bands.
I used to listen to non-stop speed metal at one point in my life. Now I can't even stand listening to the same genre all day. I still love the stuff, but I've moved on and broadened my horizon since then. From Richard Wagner to Sex Pistols to Jesu, I love 'em all.
By the way, I'm slowly acclimatizing myself to Animal Collective. It's taking a while for them to sit firmly in my musical head, but I do like them. I particularly like "Water Curses".
