could be a destruction vs. repair thing. Raine is good at healing, and therefor doesn't have a good handle on the destruction and combination involved with cooking, she'd be good at repairing things and definitely biology, but can't figure out how pepper and salt go together O.o Where as Genis focuses on the control and combination of elements (an essential idea of cooking, elements=ingredients).
Just a theory.
I actually never use cookbooks. I have the ingredients and the basic idea to put things together, but after that it's all accidents and miracles.
hm...he read a cookbook and follows the recipes? I use cookbooks, but I alter the recipes XD Then again, I think they had a skit in ToSII about how Genis's experiments in cooking always work out while Raine's doesn't X3
