Books and Writing
So I've been reading this book--The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake by Aimee Bender. She writes magical realism. For you non-writer types, it's a style of writing that incorporates realism with surrealism. Something is just a bit off. I actually met Aimee Bender a few years ago and had a writer's workshop with her. She's pretty awesome. But anyway, I'm loving this book. It's about a girl who can taste the emotions of the people who prepare the food that she eats. I have a friend who's reading it too and she told me it gets really weird towards the end. I can never anticipate Bender's twists so I'm curious. Hoping it doesn't totally destroy my love for this story....
I love magical realism though. If I could write in magical realism all the time, I'd do it. It's so much fun to write.
Speaking of writing. I finished a manuscript the other day. How long have I been working on this one...? I think I first started it four years ago. I talked about it a couple of times here--"For the Love of Cosplay" it's called. Haha. It's been a long time since I've started something new. I kind of miss it, actually. Maybe I should work on publishing a little.
Anyway, if you like weird but beautiful books, I'd recommend The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake. Also Willful Creatures. There's a short story in there about a double murder and salt and pepper shakers; it's my favorite Bender short story.
Weather, Make up your Mind Already!!!
So tired of this inconsistant weather. Either it's freaking cold, overcast and muggy, or hot and sunny. No me gusta....
Summer has been going as per usual. The scramble to find a job has been kicked up a notch in desperation due to my living situation come September. It feels like there are more job positions available but nothing has worked out yet, unfortunately.
Worked myself through four books already. Read Hunger Games. Anyone read that? It's all the rage right now, I guess. A pretty good book. Check it out if you can. Right now I'm reading Heat Wave, to nurse my withdrawl from Castle for the summer. I've only got fifty pages left though....I'll probably finish that tonight.
What else have I been filling my days with? Summer homework--lame. Worked on cosplay a little bit. Finished the undershirt. Can't really do much else at the moment otherwise. I need to go see if I can lighten my main piece because when I dyed it, it came out too dark. I can move on from there when I get that done but after that, I'll just have to figure out logistic stuff about what I want things to look like and debate with myself about spending more money over the summer.
Also playing lots of Zelda. I really do love that game. I also love how every time I play it, I learn something new. My brother has been playing one of the old ones, you know, the 8-bit kind. He's actually made some headway so I'm thinking I'll try my hand at that one after I finish with good ol' Ocarina of Time.
Weather: Sunny with a Chance of Ass-Kicking
That title actually has nothing to do with my post (except that it is really sunny). It was just used in Castle on Monday and I had to use it somewhere. What I really wanted to say was:
I'M GOING TO ANTARCTICA!!! (and Argentina)
But I have to cry a little on the inside that I'm not going to Australia. It's times like these that I really wish that I had teleportation powers.
