What is Life?

Lee

I stood frozen for a while unsure of what to do, and all that came to me was the feeling of my own lungs filling with air and then forcing the air outwards once more. It was both a relaxing and sickening feeling. However, just as the peace was starting to sink into me, I felt myself tighten. The sound of splashing rang out into my ears, and I found that I was suddenly standing on a beach. A Houndoom was splashing in the water trying to force her way to the surface. I felt my muscles tense, and before any thought came to pass, my body moved, and I was instantly swimming through the water.

“I won’t die! I won’t die!” the Houndoom screamed out as she continued to splash in the water. I As I managed to get to her, I seized the Houndoom’s arm. She seemed to recoil at this action and barked at me.

“It’s alright!” I said sharply causing the Houndoom to suddenly stop. The water was still a torrent, and I seized her by the arm once more. She looked at me and reflected a look of startled fear that suddenly narrowed into something else. “Come with me!” I ordered as I began to pull her arm.

“I can’t swim!” the Houndoom yelled sharply at me.

“Then grab on!” I answered making a motion with my shoulder. She seized my arm farther up and then my shoulder, moving sideways in the water, I looked around trying to find some form of shore that I had left only a few minutes before. Yet there was no shore in sight anymore, and I found myself kicking and keeping both me and the Houndoom afloat. The Houndoom seemed to flinch to herself in the water and look around as we both searched for land. There was a nervous sound that escaped the fire dog, and yet I was unsure of what to explain it as.

“Do…. Do you see land?” I asked as my eyesight continued to fail in search of land.

“I won’t die… Hon… I won’t let myself die…” the Houndoom continued to speak as if to herself, and I felt my arm tighten as she clung to me more. Suddenly I found success, there in an almost illusion way, land stood. I knew in that moment it didn’t matter if it was a true illusion or not. I had to get there. Forcing my legs into a kicking motion, I began to peddle myself as well as the female Houndoom to shore.

It was a stressful paddle to say the least. I began to start using low kick moves in the water in order to keep going, but I was starting to run out of energy. The coast still seemed far off, and yet there was nothing I could do but continued forwards. The Houndoom had started to half calm as she realized that I would not allow her to drown here, and yet she still clamped my arm tightly. I let out a sharp breath and forced myself more and more towards shore. However, it was becoming apparent that I was not a truly gifted swimmer. Even the female Houndoom Gijinka seemed to notice this. With a shaking voice, she began to address me.

“I see the shore,” the female Houdoom said at first. “Please… don’t give up….”

“Right,” I answered her sharply, and with that, I began to force us both forwards once more. Yet this spurt of energy was short lived. I was growing more and more tired by the second. As I continued to battle the waves and force us both forwards, the shore began to come closer and closer. Yet it wasn’t coming fast enough. I was becoming too fatigued, and my muscles were starting to become tired. Truthfully, this was better training than expected; I needed to work with swimming more often... I found myself thinking the words and laughed at the sudden thoughts. If we didn’t make it to shore it would not matter anyways. I refused to give up. My will was not weak, and I refused to give up. Forcing one last ditch effort, I propelled us both forwards once more, and suddenly, the feeling of sand was under us. This was an area we could stand on. I forced my legs down into the sand that provided for ground as we both dragged ourselves onto the beach.

“Tha-thank you,” the Houndoom said breathing out in a rhythmic pattern as we both lay flat on our backs on the beach. I was waterlogged, and I didn’t doubt that the female Houdoom was too. Who knew how much longer she had been in the water than I, and it was truly stressful for a fire pokemon to deal with water.

I only allowed myself to rest for a few minutes before I finally forced myself up fully once more. My karate uniform was soaked, and I slid it off for a solid moment and rug the salt water from it. So we had truly been in a sea then. Shaking my head, I let out another breath and looked at the Houndoom who now appeared to be trying desperately to recompose herself on land. She was now on all fours and hunched over on the sand clinging to it as though it were going to leave her or worse.

“Are you alright?” I asked calmly sliding the now half dry karate jacket back on. It seemed a bit less heavy now.

“I….. I’m fine,” the Houndoom answered back. “And…. Thank you…..” She turned her head now and seemed to be surveying me with a careful eye. Forcing herself to stand, the female Houndoom Gijinka shook the water from her form sharply as an actual Houndoom would do spraying my form with water. Seeing this, the female Houndoom Gijinka turned sharply red. “S-sorry,” she said after a moment, but I just shook my head and let out a half laugh.

“It’s fine,” I answered back keeping my eyes level as I forced myself up. “My name is Lee… I don’t think we have met before.”

“I’m Hoom….” The now named Hoom answered back.

We were both fully standing now, but just as there was a moment of peace, a scream hit my ears. My head turned sharply, and I found that the area had changed yet again. Just what was going on?
