And because they did a few comedy bits with it, like how Piplup always got hit by the failed attempts at a Draco Meteor by Ash's Gible.

Yeah, I think Piplup really worked as a second out-of-Pokeball Pokemon, especially because he contrasted Pikachu a lot.
If you ask me, Dawn's Piplup made a better sidekick for Pikachu than Iris's Axew.
I'm not sure I really like the idea of Axew as Iris's Pikachu. It just doesn't seem to fit to me...Again, might be my unexplained dislike...

Yeah, it's not the most memorable line of dragons out there (though the anime is trying to make it so with Iris's Axew).

I've never been a fan of the Haxorus line, though I don't really know why. Something about them just seems...I dunno, unremarkable. I much prefer Gen V's other dragon.
