The groundbreaking ceremony for the $1 billion Borgata Resort took place on Sept. 21, with many believing the move will mark a turning point in Atlantic City's next phase of growth. That evening, construction officially began on Atlantic City's first new property in more than a decade, Borgata.
William S. Boyd, Chairman and CEO of Boyd Gaming Corporation, attended an event by MGM Mirage Chairman Terry Rani to announce the beginning of the development of a joint venture between the two companies. Executives were also accompanied by New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman, Atlantic City Mayor James Whelan, and other prominent New Jersey and Atlantic City officials on the nearly 30-acre site.
Upon opening in 2003, Borgata will be Atlantic City's first new resort in 13 years and the largest hotel on the market. The 40-story development plan includes 2,010 rooms, approximately 120,000 square feet of gaming space, several professional restaurants and unique boutiques, a European-style spa, and several entertainment venues.
The new four-lane Atlantic City-Brigantin link currently under construction will connect the Atlantic City Highway and Marina District to provide central infrastructure for development in the region. It is expected to be completed in the coming months and will provide access to Borgataro as well as other casinos and businesses located in the region.
"This is an important milestone for Borgata, which represents an important growth opportunity for Boyd Gaming and Atlantic City. The Borgata will cover nearly 30 acres and the building will cover more than 4 million square feet. The innovative design of the property will create a fun and vibrant atmosphere," said William S.
