If it was an essay, yes it would be incorrect. But because it's a story, there are exceptions. here it it creating an effect. and wih the family thing, don't forget it is 'they' was (this is referring to the note) my family. But they still are. It is sorta complicated, but I chose the words for a reason
Hmm. It's good, only having the word "and" after a full stop is grammaticaly incorrect, and it should probably be "they were my family," not "they was my family. But I don't know much about that sort of things. For every rule there is in English there's an exception.
