I don't do backgrounds too often, so idk how much this'll help... but maybe try something like this: [click][click]
Basically the side with the light source (the left) is going to be lighter, and the side farthest from the light source (the right) is going to be darker. :)
Also, places that are closer are going to be lighter than places that are farther away. Most of the shadows will probably go into the top-right corner, since that seems to be the place that's visually "farther away" from everything.
