Watch episode three of the first series sometime if you want a good idea of how they compare! I just watched it again, and the tone was even more different than I remember, even if a few lines of dialogue are exactly the same. It's interesting how the same basic events can be played so differently. (There are a few references to anime-only plotlines, too.)
And a few bits of characterization are different, too: they have Ed pretty much pressuring Al into the plan (which served as guilt fodder later on, of course), and Roy walking in with this HILARIOUSLY BLASE reaction. "Oh. Nifty. You should come work for me. *leaves*" vs. "YOU DUMBFUCK WHAT DID YOU DOOOOOOOO" is a pretty big gap.
And now, of course, I want a version of 24 starring Roy. "HURRY! HURRY!!! THERE'S!!!!! NO!!!!!!!!! TIIIIIIIIIIMEE!!!!!!!!!!!!"
You're pretty much spot-on with that characterization. Ed pretty much bypasses all the typical shounen determination and goes straight on into obsessive territory. One of my favorite things about the manga was that they made it clear without saying it outright that if he hadn't had something else to fixate on, he probably wouldn't have recovered. It's part of what makes him such an interesting character to me.
The other part probably has something to do with the fact that he's a cocky, abrasive little asshole. And I am very fond of those.
GAH I AM SO WORDY ABOUT THIS SERIES LATELY. It's because no one will discuss it with me. XD

lol, I can't comment on differences/similarities among the manga/first season/Brotherhood, because, obviously, I am familiar with Brotherhood only, but I did like ep2 a lot.
... basking in their own awesome.
That is an apt way to put it, haha. It works really well as a lead-in to everything going completely bugfuck bonkers during the transmutation scene. I enjoyed the sense of foreboding beforehand with the fisheye view of their home, along with the blood red tint of that shot. I knew the basics of Ed and Al's backstory before watching the episode, but seeing it played out in motion is ... kind of scary, honestly lol.
The "Holy shit, I wasn't wrong, I just didn't do enough!!" bit says a lot about Ed to me. On the outside, yeah, he's definitely mourning and in pain, but deep down he's ready to move on and make things right again, even if he has to rip his whole body apart in the process. (Although that would be counterintuitive to what he's trying to do. xD)
LOL, Al's leer got a good laugh out of me, too.
lol, your characterization of Mustang makes me think of Jack Bauer on 24. "WHERE'S THE BOMB?!?!?!?!" "WHO ARE YOU WORKING FOR?!1!1!!1!!!/????" etc.
