All great artist and minds were denied or were treated as loonys by the people of their time.
Einstein, Copernicus and most writers out there felt that very well. Those people that refused to accept you today, they have those golden rules where they think each and every writer should follow it without question. What they don't think or forgot about it, is that in this same rules that are so important today might not be tomorrow.
What is surprising in all this is all great artist, minds and/or writers considered as incredible today were the ones who broke almost, if not, all rules from their times. They were considered eccentric because they saw beyond those same rules and found different ways to see the world and express it.
They were only accepted and considered the best because someone who had an open-mind saw how incredible their minds were.
So dear, although it's hard to be denied from a place like that I think it will be good for you because that way you can developed your skills the way you wanna/feel it and not because someone is telling you to do or feel on this certain way.
And you know what? You know who really has the final answer to tell you if you're really good at what you do?
It's not them but the people. The normal people, like me and everyone else. Their the ones who will read your books and your stories and tell you if it's good or not. And I tell you right away that you're a great writer and I'm sure that soon everyone will have the chance to read your stories and poems.
And most important of all, it's what you feel. What you feel when your writing, did writing makes you happy? If it does, why should you stop doing it because someone who thinks and is considered as someone who understands (all about) writings tells you to?
It'll be hard to keep developing on your own but it'll worth it, one day you will show the ones that denied you today how terribly wrong they were to consider you a “shallow” writer and see how incredible writer you truly are.
So hun, put your head up and keep going. One day you will show them. One day. You'll see.
...... Name and address, please. I'm gonna make a house call
These people don't have a clue, Beckles, so while you're totally entitled to grieve this unexpected blow I hope it makes you kick their teeth in put the experience to good use and hang them publicly put them to shame when you're [more] famous. With your head held high!

I'm really sorry. I know how awful it is to have one's writing be rejected. :( But you seem to have the right attitude about how to move forward.
