Hm, the lesson here is be absolutely sure what you're buying before you spend the money.
I could recommend a lot of shows. Haibane Renmei, Mobile Suit Gundam 00, RaXephon, Noir, Full Metal Panic!, Trinity Blood, X, Mushi-shi, Le Chevalier D'eon, Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora... Is that enough to start with? ^^
Aww shoot, sorry to hear about your disk getting broken. I hope you have fun with your anime. I prefer subtitles over dubbing myself, although I agree that sometimes the dubbing can be good.
I really haven't watched that much anime... Mushishi is really good though ^^ i'm about half way through watching that series and I really enjoy it.
