People did the same thing with early anime fansubs. Before internet distribution was available groups would produce fansubbed VHS tapes that got copied and mailed around.
Though that was well before I ever watched anime, I do remember watching old MPEG-1 and DivX 3 encoded fansub VHS rips. They were absolutely horrible compared to fansubs today but no less entertaining. A shot of Samurai X, circa 2001.
