I can't copy AT ALL, so I trace...and somehow that sticks very well in my memory so then I CAN copy it...but most of the time I don't really feel like copying it.

I guess you should do whatever helps you the most.

Tracing is really helpful when you have no idea how something is supposed to look. xD I try to steer clear of tracing when possible, though.

I like comparing my OCs, too. Or just looking back at my old OCs...well, most of my OCs are pretty different than eachother (just some of them are the same character with a different name).

I like drawing curls~! X3 But I dunno how to explain how to draw curly hair...O.o; I dunno...go get a picture of a character with curly hair and try to either draw those curls or trace. I think that's the best way to figure it out. Tracing is good because you can realize how to make certain things flow throughout the piece.
