OK, this isn't uplifitng (well, it can be actually, but it still has a sad ending), but if you ever want to watch another anime that has real emotional drama (and no fanservice), watch Haibane Renmei.
I'd suggest not watching: Elf a Tale of Memories
Because of how sad it can be but alas its so darn cute that I feel tempted to mail you so you can watch it X3;;

To be fair, "Onegai Teacher" only breaks your soul in the second-last episode, but then fixes everything in the last episode. But yeahhhh . . .
