Ah, that's interesting. I always make names based on their exact origin. I go into the whole research of what their name means and where it's from before I decide on a name.

I see that all the time; an American character (especially in fanfiction, holy bananas!) will have the most Japanese name possible. I've been guilty of it before actually, and I have no idea what I was thinking when I was coming up with some of the names for those characters. I think it's just because I liked Japanese names a lot, and wanted to use a few.
However, that is a rather interesting detail to come across. "Hi. My name is Wataru, and I'm English!!1"
