Personally, I just decide on their personality, and then have a contradicting flaw, and then go by that...And in that way it's easier to become the character.

I'm glad you're liking Mariko better. I don't like her AS MUCH, but she is a fun character to create since she's such a fan girl! XD
Kiyoshi's a fan boy, too...but...he doesn't talk about it that much, but if it's (or HE'S) mentioned...He will blow up, into his fan boy-ness.
Tobias is a fun character I created, but he's very depressing...TT^TT
