Hm... Was it an older power cord? Maybe it had been through enough heating already in it's life that it failed.
I would absolutely freak out if I lost any of my stuff. o3o If you don't have one, invest in an external hard drive, which is what I did (I have 2 actually). That way even if your computers ever crash, your data is safe.
