Eh, I didn't like this much until about the last 25 minutes or so when it starts to veer away from the manga/anime. Maybe it's because I'd read the manga twice and seen the anime, but I thought most of the live-action movie was pretty boring. The novelty of seeing it in live action wore off quickly, and it just seemed like the movie was going through the motions of the plot while trying to cram a ton of things into a couple of hours.
Overall, though, I'd probably agree with your assessment - not horrible, but not amazing, either. The second movie is better.
Live-action dubbing totally weirds me out, especially with my background with it (why the heck do Chinese movies these days get dubbed with Chinese accents but no other movies do that?).
I never caught this movie yet, but I'm glad to hear it's pretty decent.
Normally, I am as well. I mean, there are some great dubs out there right now (Outlaw Star, Cowboy Bebop and Yu Yu Hakusho, just to name a few), but with live-action... You get into a realm that's just weird, for lack of better term, lol.

Normally I'm all for dubs, but I have to admit, live-action dubbing kind of weirds me out. ^^;
