This puts my mind at ease a bit more. I really didn't/don't think it's the motherboard, because the laptop is barely a year old and I probably would have some OTHER problems if that was the case. :P

That happened to a laptop of mine once (had to use the same bending trick and everything!). Don't remember what the problem was, although amusingly enough, I was also told motherboard.
