I'm not sure if I'm the best person for advice, but my older brother is a graphic designer and one of my friends is a computer programmer.
My brother basically took a few classes in college and got a few jobs designing web pages for a few local businesses in town, such as a bank and a costume store. Sorry if that's not a lot help :x
