San-X is not Sanrio: why the Sumikko Gurashi and Rilakkuma plush you actually want never leaves Japa

Continuing the haul notes. This one is for the plush people, because San-X trips up almost everyone who assumes it works like Sanrio.

The company difference is the whole problem

Sanrio runs official English storefronts in a bunch of markets, so Hello Kitty and Cinnamoroll are annoying-but-possible to buy legitimately from abroad. San-X - the house behind Rilakkuma (debuted September 2003) and Sumikko Gurashi (debuted September 2012, now 69 named characters) - does not. Their own net shop states outright that it is a Japanese domestic service and does not ship internationally, on the grounds that the goods are made to Japanese standards and are not certified for other markets.

That is a policy, not a shipping quirk you can talk your way past. And it applies to exactly the things worth having.

What you can get anywhere vs what you cannot

Findable overseas: the evergreen general-release plush in S and M sizes. Licensed importers carry them, marked up, but they exist.

Japan-only, permanently:
- Rilakkuma Store and character-store exclusives, including the store-manager (店長) badge plush that each branch does differently
- Seasonal and campaign runs - Halloween, New Year zodiac, collab lines. Made once, dated, never restocked
- Prize plush from 一番くじ and crane games. Never retailed anywhere, so the Japanese secondhand market is the only route
- Complete tenori (palm-size) sets, which only exist because somebody in Japan did the collecting
- Department-store pop-up goods, a few weeks of availability and then gone

This year's specific thing

Chairoikoguma - the little brown bear in the Rilakkuma cast - is getting 10th anniversary treatment across 2026's goods calendar. Anniversary lines in Japan follow a completely predictable shape: dated run, domestic retail and character stores, no restock. If you want it, it is this year and it is from Japan.

Buy the completed set, not the singles

The thing I got wrong for a while. A five-piece seasonal tenori set turns up secondhand as a complete unused lot - I am looking at one right now at 8,800 yen, roughly 1,760 yen a figure. Chasing those five individually means five separate orders, five service fees, and five chances of one seller going quiet. Somebody in Japan already did the work; paying their margin is almost always cheaper than doing it yourself.

Tag vocabulary, since it decides the price: 未使用 (unused), タグ付 (tag attached - collectors pay real money for this), 中古良好 (used, good). On prize plush a missing tag can halve the value.

The shipping trap, with numbers

Plush weighs nothing and takes up a lot of box, and carriers bill on whichever is greater - actual weight or volumetric weight (L x W x H in cm, divided by 5000). So you pay for the air. I quoted two real parcels on 29 August:

One small tenori plush, 150 g in an 18x14x12 box, versus a bundle at 900 g in a 40x30x25 box:

- United States: $20.99 vs $50.65
- United Kingdom: $19.17 vs $19.17
- Germany: $17.75 vs $17.75
- Australia: $17.75 vs $17.75
- Canada: $18.46 vs $18.46
- Singapore: $13.49 vs $14.91

Everywhere except the US, sea mail absorbed the bulk completely - one plush and a whole bundle priced identically, because both sit inside the opening band. On the US lane no sea option quoted, so the volumetric weight had to be paid at air rates and the bundle cost 2.4x the single plush for 750 g more of stuffing.

Practical version: if you are in Europe, Australia, Canada or Singapore, use sea mail and buy as much plush as you like, the box is basically free. If you are in the US, the box size is the bill - ask for compressed packing, favour tenori and mascot sizes over the big ones, and consolidate so you pay one volumetric charge instead of three.

And if you want to see what is actually listed over there right now, this is the search I use: Sumikko Gurashi listings in Japan - usual disclosure, that is the forwarding service I use, so treat it as a price reference rather than an endorsement.

Anyone here collecting the store-exclusive 店長 plush? That is the one sub-category I have never managed to keep up with, because each branch does its own and they are gone in a weekend.
