Microsoft details New Xbox Experience Memory Upgrade Service

By Jack Loftus
October 14, 2008 07:29 AM PST Microsoft revealed on Monday a special refurbished hard drive program for Xbox 360 Arcade owners who are unable to download the New Xbox Experience due to storage constraints.Bottom line is the New Xbox Experience (Avatars, movie service, new layout, etc.) will require 128MB of free space. Some of the console variants, like the Arcade, do not have the space necessary to download this major new update.

So on Monday, Microsoft revealed that it would be offering refurbished hard drives at a discount, and free 128MB memory cards, to those users who purchased an Xbox 360 with no memory solution.

Owners can redeem their card or drive by entering both the 12-digit serial number and the 12-digit Console ID at a special Microsoft web site.

GamePro readers who need to use this service are encouraged to detail their experience in the comments. Was it easy to do? What were the challenges? Do you agree with this response from Microsoft? And... GO!

Assassin's Creed sequel takes to swimming

Development for Assassin's Creed 2 is already underway, says Ubisoft Montreal animation director David Wilkinson. n speaking to AusGamers about the studio's upcoming Prince of Persia game, Wilkinson says at least one Ubisoft Montreal animator is "busy making Altair even more beautiful," adding that the Assassin's Creed lead was learning how "to swim."

The statement is the first official confirmation that a sequel to Assassin's Creed is in development, however expected given the commercial success of the first game.

In June, Ubisoft president Laurent Detoc told Forbes (via Shack News) that Assassin's Creed wouldn't make a return until 2009 at the earliest, saying "when we bring it back, there will be more anticipation for it."

A release window for Assassin's Creed 2 was not mentioned. Prince of Persia will release on PS3, Xbox 360, and PC on December 2.

Microsoft denies Xbox 360 Blu-ray report

Company says it has "no plans" to launch an external Blu-ray drive for Xbox 360, contrary to a new unproven report published Wednesday."As we've said before, Microsoft has no plans to introduce an Xbox 360 Blu-ray add-on," a Microsoft representative told GamePro on Thursday, killing persistent rumors suggesting otherwise. "Games are what drive consumers to purchase game consoles, and we remain focused on providing the largest library of blockbuster games available."

Yesterday, a story by the unknown X-bit Labs reported that Toshiba and Samsung had been "contracted to manufacture external Blu-ray disc drives for Microsoft Xbox 360 game console," although a release date was reported as "under consideration."

This isn't the first time Microsoft has denied rumors of supporting Sony's high-definition disc format. In March, Xbox vice president Aaron Greenberg said, "Xbox is not currently in talks with Sony or the Blu-ray Association to integrate Blu-ray into the Xbox experience."

Toshiba terminated support of HD DVD in February, consequently making the external Xbox 360 HD DVD drive obsolete.
