Either way, you're the only person these thoughts are going to affect. I may not have to deal with stuff this extreme, or nearly as often as you do, but I also get hit with thoughts and details from past events that tie me up in knots.
The only way I can get through them or past them is to forcibly remind myself that what's happened can't be changed, and worrying about it won't do anything but drive me into a wall.
