Definitely PNG for avatars and other things, GIF for animations! I don't even know what a TIF is. XD JPG is probably the worst quality, but we have to use those for submission here. ^^ Hope that helps, and gorgeous avatars! Love the bokeh and text. <33

Awesome icons~ Gonna snag most of them.
And to chime in, I prefer to use JPG for avatars (since some forums allow nothing but JPG), and provide both JPG and PNG versions for vectors: JPG if I want to add a background to make the vector look more interesting, and PNG for the vector sans the background (that is, ready to be used without needing to be extracted).
A friend of mine needs to print lots of things, and he said TIFF is a format mostly used by printing companies (they requested the files in this format).

I'd recommend GIF only for animation or transparency things, since it's quite limited in the color handling department.
