It's an insult in Japan, not something that you would ever use to refer to yourself. :) It's sort of like "nerd" or "geek" here, but it has become popular to call yourself a nerd/geek so it doesn't really work anymore. :/ But Japanese people rarely rarely "self-identify" as "otaku." So when people call me an otaku I can't help but feel insulted. :/
