Both. But it stands for Advanced SubStation Alpha, which is the subtitle format. It's an improved version of the old SSA (SubStation Alpha) format so that's why they kept the double S in the file extension.

I'm trying to figure out if ASS stands for something or if it's just what you exclaim every time you get one of those word-heavy scenes.
