My Top (Overlooked) Anime of 2014

Happy New Year fellow Otaku! To ring in the new year, I thought it would be fitting for me to talk about my a few favorite, but sometimes overlooked, anime of 2014. #1. D-Frag!

Plot: The delinquent Kenji Kazama decides join the "Game Creation Club(Provisional)" by it's weird members, because if it doesn't get a 5th member, it will shut down. The club, however, turns out to be more than expected, with each other member being a complete lunatic.

This show is a short, 12 episode slice of life. At first I was a bit skeptical about this show, as the first episode didn't really rope me in right away, but I continued on, and it was well worth it. It is a show packed to the rafters with funny jokes and clever reoccurring gags. It's also worth noting that Kana Hanazawa (voice of Onodera from Nisekoi, Nadeko from the Monogatari series, Kuroneko from Oreimo, and many more) voices one of the main characters in the show, so you know her role will be as kawaii as ever. That also means she sings in the ED theme as well. And speaking of the soundtrack, the show also has a decent OP and ED.

#2. Noragami (Stray God)

Plot: God Yato has ambitions to be one of the best gods to be worshiped in Japan. The only problem is, he only takes 5 yen ($0.05) donations as compensation for the odd jobs he performs. To make matters worse, his regalia (weapon) decided to call it quits and get a better job with a better god.

This show was definitely not would I expected it to be. However, this was actually a good thing. I was kinda hoping this would be comparable to The Devil is a Part-timer in that it was kinda like a fish out of water scenario, and more comedy based than anything. While the first few episodes of Noragami are comedy oriented, I found that more often than not I was actually filled with suspense, and emotion from the events of the short series. The art was very interesting for this show, and I found that the character designs were different than most I'd come across before. Also, the OP and ED for the show are simply amazing. This is definitely a great show I'd recommend to those who like a good action-drama anime, with hints of comedy here and there. The only let down is, it's ending isn't as fulfilling as I would've liked it to be, and is kind of like a "read the manga" ending.

First Post!

How exciting! Well let me get started, then. College Otaku is more than just a blog, from here on out. To me, it’s going to be a place where I can basically just jot my thoughts, a social network in a way. I plan on frequently using it to talk about a few things that are, but are not limited to, Anime, College, Life, Video Games, and Music.

Now for this first post in particular, I’d like for me to summarize my college career thus far, so I can catch you up to current events. As of today, December 28th soon to be 29th, I have finished 1 count ‘em 1 semester of college at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte. A freshman in the truest sense. I am undeclared, though I plan to declare in International Business once I am able to. For my first semester, I took mostly freshman classes, with the only notable class being Japanese. Now, Japanese was, for lack of better word, DOPE. I loved every moment of that class. In fact, I loved it so much I decided to fail and take it again! (Only joking) I actually got an A, and am going to take the following level of it next semester. Japanese and my decided major choice of international business were both slightly random, in that I kinda just up and decided that was what I wanted to do with my life mid Skype conversation with my best friend. Though, the Japanese may come from the fact that this past year was the year I discovered anime, and became the biggest weeaboo (to cite urban dictionary “Someone who is obsessed with Japan/Japanese Culture/Anime”) in a matter of days.

For the first semester of school in addition to Japanese, I took a business calculus class, and a linguistics class (which was awful). So really nothing of interest, and next semester should yield the same level of interest…

I live on-campus in one of your more traditionally small college dorm rooms. It’s pretty nice, though. My roommate is a senior, who while at times is a little foolish, is actually quite wise. So between him, and just living on my own, I have gained a load of experience I didn't think was possible to acquire in a mere semester. So, instead of being selfish and hoarding all of these amazing life experiences I've had, I decided to create a blog!
